Campaigners hope to make sure all maternity wards across the UK have access to machines which detect heart defects in newborns.

The charity, Tiny Tickers, external, says its Test for Tommy campaign is a key part of its mission to ensure no baby dies from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

The campaign is named in memory of Natasha Pye's son, Tommy, who died in 2015.

A post-mortem examination found he had a birth defect which involved his arteries being the wrong way round.

According to Tiny Tickers, a baby is born with a serious heart condition every two hours in the UK.

York Hospital has started using the monitors since Tommy's death.

A total of 20 of the 23 trees on Western Road will be saved, despite the council voting to get rid of them, according to the Green Party

At a public meeting last December, it was decided that trees on the road, planted in 1919, would be removed and replanted.

The trees were planted in honour of local soldiers who died in World War One, but are due to be cut down as part of a £2bn road and footpath improvement project.

The council has insisted only trees which were dead, diseased, or causing damage would be felled, though this has been disputed by those opposed to the project.
