    A former bath house in Sheffield which had fallen into disrepair and was almost put up for auction has been registered as an "asset of community value" by the city's council.

    Birley Spa Bath House was due to go to auction in September, but more than 900 people signed a petition calling for the council to look at putting it back into public use.

    The move comes after campaigners made a successful bid to change the building into asset of community value.

    It means the sale of the building is delayed for six months to give the community group chance to put forward its own bid for the building, before it can be potentially sold to someone else.

    Several streets in Bridlington have been closed off and there is a heavy police presence, following reports of a suspicious package being found at an empty property, an eyewitness has told the BBC.

    Bomb disposal experts are currently on the scene on West Street after contractors working on the building found a suspicious package and a number of weapons inside, police say.

    A number of homes have been evacuated.

    Susan Warren, who lives nearby, said: "Everything is cordoned off. We couldn't get anywhere near, but as far as we know they have found something up there."

    An image of a man who is thought to have been involved in a knife-point robbery in Sheffield has been shared by police.

    Officers believe the man pictured could hold vital information after an 18-year-old man had his jewellery stolen outside The Leadmill nightclub.

    It happened at about 02:40 on Sunday 21 October.

    Police are wanting to speak to the man, who is wearing a Stone Island jacket, with short dark hair and a beard.

    A 15-year-old girl who has gone missing from Portsmouth could be in East Yorkshire, according to Hampshire Police.

    Officers say Billie-Mae was last seen in Cosham at about 16:00 on Monday but they believe she could now be in East Yorkshire.

    She's described as white, about 5ft 7ins tall, of slim build, with straight shoulder-length dark brown hair.

    She was last seen wearing an orange/red padded puffa-style jacket, blue jeans, and black Doc Marten boots.

  5. Are Rotherham's phone boxes set to be a thing of the past?published at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

    Traditional phone boxes are expected to vanish from the streets of Rotherham under plans which would seem them replaced with a free high-tech alternative, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The payphones will be replaced with "portals" which offer ultra-fast broadband in addition to telephone services and information about the council and charities.

    Plans have been submitted to install a network of the devices, which are smaller than a payphone booth and use large screens to display information and the advertising which will fund their use.

    The project is a collaboration between BT and technology firms and 220 of the devices have already been installed elsewhere in the country, including in Sheffield (pictured above).

    Locations identified for the new portals include outside Riverside House in Main Street, Church Street, Drummond Street, Eastwood Lane, Bridgegate and Effingham Square.

    Christmas (yes, we know, it still feels too early) officially begins in Leeds tomorrow with the switching on of the city's lights.

    Leeds-born boxing champion Josh Warrington has the honour of flicking the special switch at Victoria Gardens.

    The fun starts at 18:45 and the IBF world champion will be joined onstage at Victoria Gardens by Britain's Got Talent's Micky P Kerr and 2017 X Factor finalist Kevin Davy White.

    Also joining in the fun will be presenter of the BBC's Cbeebies programme I Can Cook, Katy Ashworth.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of affray after violence broke out in a part of Leeds this afternoon.

    Officers were called to Dulverton Place in Cottingley at about noon, following reports of a disturbance involving a number of men.

    By the time police had been called and arrived the men had left.

    There was a similar incident in Cottingley Vale, which police believe was linked, but there were no injuries or damage.

  8. Plans for Hull's landmark Lord Line building get go-aheadpublished at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2018

    Plans to restore a derelict trawler company building on a former fish dock in Hull have been approved by councillors.

    The owners of the Lord Line building, Manor Properties, want to turn the site into a restaurant and bar.

    Previous plans to demolish the building were turned down.

    Hull City councillors approved the plans on the condition that work has to be under way within 12 months.

    The bomb squad has been called to Bridlington after reports a suspicious package and several weapons have been found at a property in the town.

    A fleet of electric buses in North Yorkshire is currently being powered by a diesel generator.

    Harrogate Bus Company unveiled eight electric buses in July, announcing a five-year vision of making Harrogate a low-emission bus town.

    Funding for the electric buses came from a £2.25m grant from the government's Low Emission Bus Scheme.

    However, three months later, the fleet is being charged by a low-emission diesel generator at their Station Parade base.

    Keith Roebuck, general manager of Harrogate Bus Company, said: "We're working hard to resolve the red-tape infrastructure issue which is preventing us from using the electric chargers as planned."

    Mr Roebuck conceded it was not the "ideal scenario", but said the firm was working towards a permanent solution.

    He added: "Once we have resolved the issue, the chargers will be fuelled by a renewable energy contract ensuring the buses are truly zero-emission."

    Police officers have pleaded with motorists travelling today to slow down in the rain after a crash on the M1.

    Earlier, a car crashed at junction 34 on the northbound carriageway near Meadowhall, with South Yorkshire Police saying conditions are "extremely bad".

    Damage to the car's axle and petrol tank means it can't be moved yet, with officers asking drivers to be aware of standing water on the motorway.

    The Hindu festival of lights is being marked across Yorkshire.

    It's celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.

    The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness.

    Police are still trying to find a suspect who left a teenager with multiple fractures when he tried to stop a fight in Leeds. Officers say they want to speak to this man:

    The attack happened in March at McDonalds on Briggate in the city centre.

    The victim, an 18-year-old man, suffered multiple facial fractures after being punched while trying to stop the fight.

    More than £250,000 worth of cannabis has been seized by police at a "factory" in South Yorkshire after members of the public complained about the smell.

    An app developed in East Yorkshire has been praised at an international education summit in Finland.

    The tablet and smartphone program, created by the Brough-based company Chatta, is aimed at young children.

    It encourages them to upload their own pictures and talk about them.

    Pocklington School has been involved in the development of the app and pupils there have been testing it out.

    It was named at the HundrED Education Summit in Helsinki as one of the top 100 innovations in education.

    A man from Doncaster was tied up and attacked and his home ransacked in a violent assault, according to police.

    The 61-year-old victim was left with extensive bruising following the attack, which happened at about 23:30 on Sunday 4 November.

    Three men went into the victim's home, on Station Road in Dunscroft, and subjected him to a sustained and violent assault, police said.
