MP calls for Red Arrows to be based in North Yorkshirepublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2018
A North Yorkshire MP has called for the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the world-famous Red Arrows, to be based at RAF Leeming.
The RAF is in the process of selecting a new home for the Red Arrows, following a decision announced in the summer to close their current home, RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.
RAF Scampton, which was also home to 617 Squadron as they prepared for the Dambusters mission in World War Two, has housed the Red Arrows since 2000.
The Richmond MP, Rishi Sunak, says the squadron of pilots, engineers and support staff, would be an “ideal fit” for the North Yorkshire base.
Mr Sunak has written to Defence Secretary, Gavin Williamson, making the case for RAF Leeming.
In his letter, Mr Sunak says the base has significant advantages over its rivals, principally the presence at Leeming of 100 Squadron flying Hawk T1 fast jets, the same aircraft used by the aerobatic team for its displays.
The Red Arrows have been displaying since 1965 and by the start of this year had flown almost 4,900 displays in 57 countries.
