Unlike other parts of the country where a clean air zone is a mandatory requirement, Liberal Democrat Councillors in the city say they've introduced the new voluntary zone based on evidence collected on air pollution in the city.

Last year, levels of air pollution in York, alongside Leeds and Sheffield, were found to be in breach of World Health Organisation guidelines.

A consultation on the clean air zone plan saw 91% of people spoken to say they were worried about pollution in the city, with 13% saying they had an illness affected by poor air quality.

Councillor Andrew Waller, executive member for the environment at City of York Council, said: "I am pleased the £1.6m investment proposal has received approval.

"I'm looking forward to building on the work already undertaken to tackle air pollution in the city, such as introducing more electric buses on the Park and Ride network.

"Once the clean air zone is established, we can begin to target buses which most frequently pass through the city centre and, thus, have the greatest impact on reducing pollutants."
