Read MoreBuses going through York city centre are set to become greener under a £1.6m plan due to be signed off by senior city councillors later.
It's part of a longer-term scheme to set up a clean air zone in the city.
Last year, levels of air pollution in York, alongside Leeds and Sheffield, were found to be in breach of World Health Organisation guidelines.
A consultation on the clean air zone plan saw 91% of people spoken to say they were worried about pollution in the city, with 13% saying they had an illness affected by poor air quality.
Councillor Andrew Waller said: "Targeting the buses which most frequently pass through the city centre will have the greatest impact on reducing harmful pollutants, by insisting on the use of electric or Euro VI diesel technology."
Police have warned drivers to stay clear of the A63 between Elloughton and South Cave in East Yorkshire due to a crash.
One vehicle is reported to be involved in the collision:

A teenage boy has been charged with "numerous offences" following recent reports of criminal behaviour in Hull, police say.
The 14-year-old, who can't be named because of his age, has been charged with two counts of theft, breaching a Section 35 dispersal order, using threatening or abusive words or behaviour and riding a moped without a licence.
The boy has appeared at Hull Magistrates' Court and is due to appear at Hull Youth Court next month.
Violence linked to "county lines" drugs gangs operating in North Yorkshire has hit unprecedented levels in the past 18 months, police chiefs have said.
Tackling heroin and crack cocaine in rural towns was North Yorkshire Police's "number one priority", said Det Ch Insp Graeme Wright.
"The drug supply and market in many of our isolated and rural towns is booming," he said.
A team set up nine months ago to tackle county lines has made 220 arrests.
County lines refers to urban drug dealers expanding their activities into smaller towns and rural areas, often via phone networks, to supply crack cocaine and heroin to addicts in those locations.
North Yorkshire Police has also seen a "significant escalation" in cuckooing - a practice in which vulnerable people's homes are taken over by gangs.
Det Ch Insp Wright said: "We're getting support from wider law enforcement colleagues across the region and nationally, but this is taking a serious toll on our resourcing and we're having to invest significantly.
"Typically where drug users reside, the violence has been unprecedented."
A group of MPs led by Wakefield Labour MP Mary Creagh is calling on the government to push for an international deal to protect the oceans.
They say they want ministers to stop ignoring issues like plastic pollution as seas are increasingly threatened by climate change.
It's thought about 80% of pollution in the world's oceans comes from the land through rivers, sewers and drains.
Scientists say the seas are also threatened by climate change, which it's thought could raise temperatures by as much as two degrees Celsius when compared to pre-industrial levels.
Now, the Environmental Audit Committee has called on the government to take action.
Mary Creagh said: "Our children deserve to experience the wonders of the ocean, but climate change poses a triple whammy of threats from ocean warming, deoxygenation and acidification, which are decimating marine life.
"We have to stop treating our seas as a sewer - plastics, chemicals, and sewage are choking our oceans, polluting our water."
Further talks will begin later to try to resolve a pay dispute involving Arriva bus drivers in the North East.
Drivers in Teesside, County Durham and parts of North Yorkshire held a week-long strike earlier this month and are set for a 10-day stoppage from 27 January.
The drivers are seeking an increase of £1 per hour as the Unite union says they are among the lowest paid among Arriva's national operation.
However, the company says its pay offer is already generous.
Detectives investigating the discovery of the body of a man in Barnsley say they are treating his death as "unexplained".
Emergency services were called to Smithies Pond at about 08:30 on Sunday, where the body of 56-year-old Kenneth Morse was found. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Temporary Det Ch Insp Simon Palmer says: "We know Mr Morse arrived in Barnsley by public transport on the morning of Saturday 12 January with the intention of attending the Barnsley football match and left the Courthouse Public House at about 10:20."
"He was later found with a head injury at about 14:00 in an underpass on Pontefract Road and taken to hospital in Barnsley, but left later that evening. The CCTV image shows him leaving hospital that day."A missing person inquiry was then launched, before his body was found the following morning."
Anyone with any information which could help the investigation is being asked to contact the police.

A Yorkshire police force recruiting new officers has asked applicants to send photos of their tattoos with their applications.
South Yorkshire Police issued guidance to people interested in joining the force as a police constable.
The Sheffield Star reported, external that the force said tattoos would "not necessarily" prevent someone from being successful, but there were guidelines around what is and is not acceptable.
Potentially offensive tattoos, or anything on the face, are not allowed.
Neither are tattoos on the neck, head, or hands, or facial or tongue piercings.
Tattoos on forearms or under the collar must not be visible when working with the public.
The guidance comes from South Yorkshire Police's Appearance and Standards Policy, which states anyone with tattoos, regardless of whether visible to the public or not, must send photographs with their applications.
More than 8,000 trees are to be planted in the UK's "least wooded city" as part of the new Northern Forest.
The Northern Forest initiative will see 50 million trees planted alongside the M62 motorway between Hull and Liverpool at a cost of £500m.
As part of this, native species such as birch, willow and alder will be grown around a cycle track in Hull.
The land floods during the winter and the city council said the new woodland would help to slow the flow of water.
The planting is part of a project supported by environmental charity Trees for Cities, with funding from a utility company.
The charity said Hull was the UK's least wooded city, with only 0.2% of land covered by trees. The average for England is 10%.
Stephen Robinson, from Hull and East Yorkshire Woods Partnership, said the new woodland was the first part of a series of schemes to support the Northern Forest.
"We've got a number of projects coming forward with schools across the city and the East Riding of Yorkshire," he said.

A 16-year-old girl who died following a collision in South Yorkshire has been named by police.
Macey Frudd, 16, was a passenger in a silver Vauxhall Astra in the early hours of Sunday 13 January, police say.
The car was involved in a collision with a tree at about 01:40 while travelling in the direction of Dodworth Road on Broadway.
Ms Frudd was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three other people travelling inside the car, two men, aged 18 and 19, and a 17-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.
All three were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the collision.
The 19-year-old man and 17-year-old girl have both been released under investigation, while the 18-year-old man remains on police bail.
Ms Frudd's family said: "Macey was a bubbly, fun loving girl who loved life to the full - without her we feel like our world has ended."
Officers investigating the collision say they are keen to hear from anyone who saw the Astra in the area prior to the collision, or who saw what happened.

Firefighters were called to Northallerton Tyre and Battery Company at about 18:45 last night.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident was being "scaled down" at about 22:10 and there had been no reported injuries.
Customers and staff were earlier asked to leave a nearby Asda store and M&S Foodhall as a precaution.
A "significant cordon" was put in place in the area due to the risk of exploding cylinders, according to the fire service.
North Yorkshire Police say people who were evacuated from their homes were taken to a nearby hospital canteen while firefighters tackled the blaze.
"Most have now returned home but some have been given temporary accommodation by North Yorkshire County Council," the force added.
Crews are now damping down at the scene but the cordon is expected to remain in place for some time.
The cause of the blaze is now under investigation, the fire service says.
