Ryan Lee Griffin, 27, admitted breaking health and safety rules after the outbreak of giardisis at Dolphins Swim School in Upper Poppleton, which offered classes to infants and children.

Following reports of illness linked to the school, environmental health officers took a sample of water from the pool, which was described as "dirty" and "emitting a pungent smell".

City of York Council say there were 165 confirmed cases of the infection, which causes acute diarrhoea and is of particular risk to children under five and pregnant women.

    Two people required hospital treatment.

The council says Griffin, of Blackmoor Road, voluntarily closed the business in October 2015, following advice from Public Health England.

Griffin appeared at York Magistrates Court where he was given a 12-month community order and told to pay £1,500 prosecution costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Speaking after the case, Councillor Jenny Brooks, said: "Dolphins Swim School chose to ignore health and safety legislation which put the health of children at considerable risk."
