    Drivers who refuse to switch off their engines while stationary in York could be fined, under plans to improve air-quality and public health.

    Senior councillors are being asked to approve the proposals, which also aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle noise.

    If the plans are approved, a fixed-penalty notice would only be issued if a vehicle has been observed "idling on the public highway" for more than two minutes and the driver refuses to switch their engine off.

    A Doncaster Rovers defender, given a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years for sexual assault, has been suspended by the club.

    Niall Mason, 22, of Bawtry Road, Hatfield, has also been placed on the sex offenders' register for seven years.

    Doncaster Rovers has now said it has suspended the player "in line with internal procedures and EFL contractual requirements".

    A judge at Sheffield Crown Court imposed the sentence following an attack on a woman during a night out last year.

    Leeds-based supermarket chain Asda has lost the first of three stages of its appeal against a ruling that store and warehouse staff deserve an equal hourly pay rate.

    The decision means that lower paid shop staff, who are mostly women, can compare themselves with higher paid warehouse workers, who are mostly men.

    Asda said it was "disappointed" with the decision and said it remained confident in its case.

    A ruling over whether the work is of equal value is likely to be in May.

    In a statement, Asda said it had brought the appeal "because it involved complex legal issues which have never been fully tested in the private sector.

    "We will continue to ensure this case is given the legal scrutiny it deserves".

    The 13-year-old was last seen on 28 January at about 16:30 on Westfield Lane in Scholes.

    He's described as being of slim build, about 5ft 7ins tall and he was wearing a black tracksuit, black trainers and a navy coat.

    Police are keen to hear from anyone with information about his whereabouts.

    Police officers who were called to a machete attack in Sheffield city centre this morning have been praised for their bravery.

    South Yorkshire Police officers were called to the McDonalds on High Street at about 09:25 this morning after reports of a man being seen with a machete.

    Supt Paul McCurry said officers were at the scene in less than two minutes.

    "They quickly detained the offender, placing the safety of the public over their own without hesitation", Supt Paul McCurry said in a statement.

    "This is a superb example of the bravery of police officers who every day do amazing work to protect the public.”

    A 21-year-old man's been arrested in connection with the incident in which a 47-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an incident in Sheffield city centre earlier.

    The 21-year-old suspect was arrested after a man was seen with a machete on High Street in Sheffield city centre at about 09:25 this morning.

    A 47-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, police have confirmed.

    The incident is not believed to be linked to terrorism, police add.

    The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, possession of a knife or bladed article and possession of drugs.

    Leeds United could gain winger Daniel James, who is currently with Swansea City, as it is believed he is keen to make the move.

    Championship leaders Leeds have targeted the 21-year-old during the January transfer window.

    Swansea have been trying to fend off the Yorkshire club's interest in him.

    However, it is understood James would be interested in joining Leeds if a fee can be agreed between the clubs.

    James, signed by Swansea from Hull City Academy in 2014, had initially been valued at about £10m.

    Matthew Shaw was in the McDonald's on High Street when he says he heard two women shouting about a man who had a knife.

    "I turned around and there was a man in the doorway shouting with a large machete in his hand and a man staggering in front of him with lots of blood running down his face," he said.

    "There was a panic and myself and a few others ran into the kitchen area and through the fire escape at the back. Some locked themselves in the office at the back and the toilets."

    South Yorkshire Police has confirmed one man has been arrested while another has been taken to hospital.

    Sheffield music festival Tramlines will announce who'll be playing at its 11th event later.

    The festival will be at Hillsborough Park for its second time, from 19 to 21 July.

    The site can hold up to 30,000 people, according to organisers.

    The line-up will be announced at 18:00.

    Thousands of chickens, which used to lay eggs in cages, are in need of a new home after a battery farm announced it was to close.

    A total of 10,000 hens will need a new place to live after the South Yorkshire farm said it was closing at the start of March.

    Heeley City Farm in Sheffield is helping distribute the hens and staff have said they've already received a big response from people wanting to help.
