People living in the cul-de-sac say the 25ft high soil "bund" has blocked countryside views from their bungalows.

Retired couple Alan and Doreen Boutell are among homeowners who believe it is a blot on the landscape.

Developer Gazeley said it had worked to ensure the bund had "as little impact as possible".

The soil mound was constructed in October 2018 by Gazeley, which is in the process of building two large warehouses on land behind the street.

Some homeowners on Dickan Gardens believe it has caused house prices to drop, with one property being placed on the market for £15,000 less than the average for the street.

North Yorkshire County Council leader, Carl Les issued a rallying cry for the agency as investigations continue into its former chief executive Sir Gary Verity.

Sir Gary quit his role as chief executive of the tourism board in March on health grounds.

It came after an investigation found he had "made errors of judgement regarding his expenses", and concerns were raised that he had subjected staff to "completely unacceptable" behaviour.

Mr Les, whose own authority gives £84,000 of taxpayers' money to Welcome to Yorkshire annually, spoke out after Hull and Sheffield councils said they would not be making any further contributions until the investigations are completed.

He said: “Some councils have decided to withhold their subscriptions to Welcome to Yorkshire which I think is a mistake.

"Whatever is found to be wrong will be put right, but nobody can doubt the enormous success that Welcome to Yorkshire has had in increasing the visitor economy from £4bn 10 years ago to £9bn today."
