    Two years on from the Grenfell tower disaster that killed 72 people, figures show in Leeds there are still between six and 10 buildings covered in potentially dangerous cladding.

    Latest government figures show hundreds of tall buildings across the country are still covered in unsafe materials and work hasn't yet started on half of the blocks that need changing.

    The government will not name individual buildings, nor will it give the exact numbers of buildings in each local authority area.

  2. Portrait project to celebrate Jamaican lives in Leedspublished at 08:42 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    The families of first-generation Jamaicans in Leeds are having their portraits taken as part of a project in the city.

    Jamaica Society Leeds has been awarded £81,900 for the project, entitled Eulogy, by the Lottery Heritage Fund.

    The Eulogy Project will display their photographs next to the ones of their relatives taken in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

    The project will tell the stories of those who made the journey to a new life in West Yorkshire from the Caribbean.

    Exhibition curator Susan Pitter said: “Eulogy will be a tribute to a generation who left everything and everyone 5,000 miles behind to answer Britain’s call to its Commonwealth citizens.”

    The Eulogy Exhibition will be in place from 1 August to 1 September 2019 at Leeds Central Library.

    About £500,000 is to be spent improving facilities for cyclists at some Yorkshire railway stations.

    More than £250,000 will be spent on Selby station in North Yorkshire improving access for cyclists.

    Stations in Sheffield's Meadowhall and Doncaster will also be improved.

    The Department for Transport says the investment will help commuters have "seamless" journeys.

    A community woodland made up of 2,000 trees and plants is being planted to celebrate the life of the former West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox, who was murdered three years ago.

    The Spen Valley Civic Society, the organisation behind the scheme, hopes to finish planting the woodland in Liversedge by early next year.

    It will also include an outdoor classroom and wheelchair-friendly paths.

    The announcement comes ahead of the third anniversary of the Batley and Spen MP's death, which will be marked on Sunday.

  5. Heroin and cash seized after Hull street drug dealpublished at 07:35 British Summer Time 14 June 2019

    More than £2,000 of heroin, crack cocaine and cash has been seized by police after a drug deal was seen going on in a Hull street, police say.

    Three men from Manchester and a woman from Hull were arrested yesterday after officers saw a man involved in drugs activity near Reynoldson Street.

    The man from Manchester was arrested on possession with intent to supply a controlled drug and then taken back to an address where another two men from Manchester and a woman from Hull were also arrested.

    More than £2,000 worth of suspected heroin, crack cocaine and cash was then seized at the property by officers.

    The four remain in our custody.

    A motorcyclist who died after crashing into a road sign in South Yorkshire has been named.

    Adam Featherstone, 22, from Sheffield, was riding a red and white trial bike along Oldfield Road towards Stannington, when the crash happened on Saturday at about 23:45.

    Mr Featherstone was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries on Monday.

    In a statement, his family said: "No words can describe how we are feeling. He truly was one in a million.

    "We are trying and failing to come to terms with the fact he's no longer with us and we need to know the reason why."

    Officers say they want to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or saw Mr Featherstone riding the bike before the collision.

  9. Checks needed on giant cables holding up Humber Bridgepublished at 06:30

    Maintenance work has started on the giant cables that hold up the Humber Bridge.

    Specialist engineers will spend weeks checking the galvanised steel wires on the 1.4 mile-long bridge.

    Each cable is 70cm in diameter and weighs 5,500 tonnes each.

    Opened in 1981, the Humber Bridge took nine years to build and was once the world's longest suspension bridge.

    The head of a drugs gang who has been on the run since being sentenced to 21 years behind bars in December may have fled to Ireland, say police.

    Alfred Phillip Dear, 46, from Hull, headed up an organised crime gang who stood trial last year for drug dealing and a cash machine raid.

    But he failed to turn up to court in Leeds to hear the verdict and he was sentenced in his absence.

    It's now thought that Dear, who is on the UK Crimestoppers’ Most Wanted list, external, might be in the Republic of Ireland.

    Dear, who goes by the name of Alfie and has a Yorkshire accent, is described as white, about 5ft 10in, with grey hair and possibly facial hair.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police while sightings should be reported to An Garda Siochana.

    A teenage girl fought off a man with her umbrella after he attempted to get her in to his van.

    North Yorkshire police said the 17-year-old was walking along Tudor Road, in York, at about 20:15 on 7 June when a black van pulled up alongside her and a man asked if she was “going to get into the car?”.

    When she refused the man drove in to her path, got out of the van and pushed her.

    The girl then hit the man around the head with her umbrella and fled towards the Clock House pub.

    The suspect is described as white, about 5ft 10ins tall and of skinny build.

    He is said to be about 55 years-old, has a long, white beard and receding hair and speaks with a Yorkshire accent.

    He was wearing glasses, a grey t-shirt, a black coat, black jeans and black boots.

    The vehicle is described as a small black camper van with a side door with blacked out windows.

    Officers are urging anyone with information to get in touch.
