Permanent bollards could be installed on streets in York to protect the city centre from terrorist attacks, if plans are approved by councillors.
The council says it will work with the Counter Terrorism Unit to look at measures to protect Christmas shoppers this year.
It also plans to install bollards at the end of Parliament Street (pictured) “at the earliest opportunity”, and to implement “hostile vehicle mitigation measures” at the entrance to York racecourse.
Councillor Andy D’Agorne said: “The safety of everyone in our city is the highest priority, so we have to act on police and counter-terrorist unit advice."
Senior councillors will be asked to make the restrictions permanent, with sliding bollards installed on a number of city centre streets, including Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square, Spurriergate and Coney Street.
The plans are due to be discussed at a council meeting on 29 August.

A two-week campaign to highlight the dangers of what are known as "county lines" drugs gangs has begun today in North Yorkshire.
It's being run by the charity Crimestoppers, which says county lines, where gangs from bigger cities target smaller towns and rural areas and get children to sell drugs for them, is an "emerging trend".
The campaign is starting in Selby, where Martin Wedgewood is a police inspector.
He says: "What we're seeing in North Yorkshire is the effect of gangs from Liverpool and Manchester. In Selby, we tend to be influenced by the likes of Leeds and Bradford."
Sheffield's old town hall could be converted into a hotel with shops, offices and bars in newly revealed plans for the historic building.
The former town hall and court house, which was built in 1808, has been empty since 1996.
But a planning application has been submitted showing the owner's plans to create 12 apartments and a commercial space.
The former cells in the court house could be turned into "pod hotel rooms".
The project will "bring the building back into active use and secure its viable long-term future", owners Aestrom OTH said.
The exterior of the Waingate building won't change, with any work inside being "sensitively" done to retain many of the original features.

The government is launching a review of the planned high-speed HS2 rail link - with a “go or no-go" decision to be made by the end of the year, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said.
A branch of the rail link is set to run through South Yorkshire and on to Leeds while another stretch of the route is planned to run into North Yorkshire.
The review will consider whether and how the project to connect London and northern England should proceed, looking at costs and benefits.
Mr Shapps refused to rule out scrapping the project entirely and said it was "responsible" to see if it was "going to stack up".
The first segment of the HS2 development between London and Birmingham is due to open at the end of 2026, with the second phase to Leeds and Manchester scheduled for completion by 2032-33.
When asked about the £7bn already spent on the project, Mr Shapps said: "Just because you've spent a lot of money on something does not mean you should plough more and more money into it."
A final report will be sent to the government in the autumn.
