  1. Good Samaritan steps in after teenage girl grabbedpublished at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2020

    A man who grabbed a teenage girl before a member of the public intervened is being sought by police in South Yorkshire.

    The 13-year-old girl was walking from Stainforth to Dunscroft over the flyover along Station Road when she was approached by an unknown man.

    He grabbed her by the hips before a passing motorist stopped to help the girl, according to police.

    The motorist shouted at the man, causing him to run off in the direction of Stainforth.

    The incident "understandably left the girl very shaken and upset", officers say.

    Police are now trying to trace the man who grabbed the girl, who is described as being about 20 years old, 5ft 10in tall, skinny and wearing a black tracksuit with his hood up.

    A shop assistant has been taken to hospital after suffering a "medical episode" during an armed robbery at a Rotherham petrol station earlier today.

    It happened after two men entered the Bawtry Road store this morning at about 05:10, threatened the cashier with a knife and demanded money.

    About £200 was taken before the offenders then fled the scene.

    An ambulance was called when the shop assistant suffered a medical episode, police say.

    His condition is not believed to be life-threatening, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Anyone with information about what happened is being asked to get in touch with police.

    Communities in West Yorkshire which have been hit by flooding following two storms in two weeks say they're open for business amid fears people are staying away from shopping there.

    Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd were affected by Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis - with some homes being evacuated when heavy rain led to flooding.

    But banners have now gone up in both towns telling people they towns are still open for business.

    The Hebden Bridge Business Forum said despite it being half-term, the streets of Hebden Bridge have been "deserted".

    Paid for by the forum and the Rotary Club, the aim of the banners is to get people back into the shops and cafes in the towns, spending money to help communities recover from the flooding.

    A quilt made of personalised squares from families who have lost babies has been unveiled at a Sheffield hospital.

    Remembering Baby was an idea by staff at the Jessops Wing maternity unit.

    It's aimed at giving parents who have lost babies through stillbirth, miscarriage or prematurity the chance to create a memento for their child.

    The individual squares have been stitched together to make a large quilt and feature messages or designs in memory of the babies.

    Parents who have contributed to the quilt said they did it to remember their child even though they were not here physically as part of their family.

    The Environment Agency (EA) has issued four flood warnings for the area.

    They include the Ouse at Acaster Malbis, external, at Bishopthorpe, external, Naburn, external and Naburn Lock, external.

    The EA says in Naburn the River Ouse is currently 3.59m above its normal level, external.

    It forecasts levels will fall "very slowly" and stay high throughout today.

    But Dave Stamper, who took these pictures, says there's "not much evidence" of water receding at the moment.

    Police searching for a man who sexually assaulted another man on a train in Yorkshire last month have issued this CCTV image of someone they want to speak to about the incident:

    Police say a man boarded a Wakefield Westgate train bound for Bolton upon Dearne at about 13:00 on Saturday 11 January.

    He then sat next to another male passenger before stroking the man's leg and thigh.

    The suspect then left the train at Bolton upon Dearne.

    Officers say the man in the CCTV image above could help police with their inquiries and are asking anybody who recognises him to get in touch.

    Leeds-based supermarket chain Asda has said customers were "cautious" over the Christmas period as it revealed that its sales fell in the final three months of last year.

    Asda's like-for-like sales, which excludes money taken at the tills of new stores, were 1.3% lower than the year before.

    "Whilst customers were enthusiastic for Christmas, they were more mindful in their spending," said Asda boss Roger Burnley.

    Other supermarkets also saw sales slip.

    Sales at rival Sainsbury's fell by 0.7% over a similar period, while Tesco saw a 0.2% decline and Bradford-based Morrisons recorded a 1.7% drop in sales.

    "We know that our customers' mind sets during the quarter were cautious," Mr Burnley said.

    He said many Christmas shoppers chose to pare back their gift lists and focus on buying presents for children rather than adults and extended family.

    Drugs are still getting into Hull Prison even though a body scanner has been introduced, according to prison officers.

    The Ministry of Justice says the new scanners, also installed at Humber, Leeds and Lindholme jails among others, have already caught a number of smugglers.

    The machines can also detect drugs on clothes and in prisoners' post.

    But despite this, drugs are still making their way to prisoners, officers say.

    Rob Nicholson, from the Prison Officers' Association, said: "We're up against new drugs. You've also got people who are attempting to bring stuff in.

    "So while you're battling to try and counteract everything, there's always somebody adapting new ways of getting it in. They're still getting [the drugs] into prison."

    A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We are spending an extra £2.75bn to transform our jails with tough new security measures - to improve safety and cut off the flow of drugs.”

    A North Yorkshire MP says it's important Yorkshire gets its share of £5bn pledged by the government for flood defences over the next six years.

    Current figures show a third of the money is due to be spent in London and the South East.

    Conservative MP for York Outer, Julian Sturdy, says: "We have to make sure this money gets into our region as well.

    "It's not just about building hard flood defences and higher walls. We've got to look at how we slow the flow, because that could have a huge impact on places like York."

    The government has said it's investing "record" amounts in new flood defences which would protect about 300,000 homes in total.

    It said in terms of money spent per home at risk of flooding, the north of England received more than the south.

    A man has appeared in court charged with two counts of attempted kidnap in connection with an incident involving two girls in Sheffield last week.

    An 11-year-old girl and her four-year-old sister were grabbed on Thursday on East Bank Road. Arbourthorne.

    Yesterday, Timothy Guest, 23, of Arbourthorne Road, Sheffield, appeared in court charged with two counts of attempted kidnap.

    He was remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 16 March.

    Plans are expected to be approved later for drivers of the most polluting vehicles in Bradford to be charged up to £50 a day in a bid to improve the city’s air quality.

    A Clean Air Zone in the city could be brought in by October 2021, but private vehicles will not be included.

    The move comes after Bradford Council was given a “Ministerial Direction” in 2018 to drastically reduce the district’s air pollution as soon as possible.

    Areas included in the proposed zone include the area within the Outer Ring Road, Manningham Lane/Canal Road and Shipley/Saltaire.

    However, the plans are dependent on a successful £60m bid to the government, which will be used to provide grants to the owners of polluting vehicles to upgrade to greener fuel sources.

    If approved today, the plans will be put out to public consultation, external.

    The Environment Agency says the Ouse level is 4.24m above its normal level and is forecast to fall "very slowly" though staying high throughout today.

    Four flood warnings remain in place for parts of the city centre, external, with a further five in place down stream at Naburn, Naburn Lock, Bishopthorpe, Acaster Malbis and Acaster Selby.

    The city's floodgates are closed and the recently upgraded Foss flood barrier and pumping station is in operation.

    It was the failure of the barrier, where the River Foss drains into the Ouse, in 2015 which resulted in 600 properties flooding in the city.

    Two people have been treated in hospital after a fire at a dog grooming parlour in North Yorkshire.

    A woman suffered injuries to her face during the incident in West Appleton in Bedale at about 18:00 on Sunday night, which is thought to have caused by a faulty propane heater, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    She was taken to hospital along with man suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

    The fire service says crews from Colburn, Bedale, Richmond, Leyburn and Boroughbridge tackled the blaze.

  18. Council to prosecute leisure group over boy's pool deathpublished at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2020

    A leisure group is facing prosecution after a three-year-old boy drowned in one of its swimming pools.

    Rocco Wright died after being found in the pool at the David Lloyd Leisure centre in Moortown, Leeds, in 2018.

    On Monday, a jury inquest at Wakefield Coroner's Court ruled his death was accidental.

    After the inquest, Leeds City Council said it believed the group had breached health and safety laws and intended to "prosecute in the near future".

    In a statement, the council said: "We will keep in regular contact with the family and ensure they are informed and supported throughout this next stage."

    The inquest previously heard how Rocco had to be pulled from the water by his father Steven Wright in April 2018.

    In a statement after the inquest, David Lloyd Leisure said it wanted "to express our deepest sympathies to Rocco's family".

    The firm added safety was its "number one priority" and it was "unaware on what basis Leeds City Council intend to prosecute".

    The jury returned its conclusion after coroner Jonathan Leach told jurors that accident was the only one available to them.

    A teenager from Knottingley who was reported as missing last week has been found, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Bryn Perry, 15, was last seen in Belle Isle in Leeds on Friday.

    He's since been found "safe and well", police say.

    "We are grateful to everyone who assisted in sharing the appeal", a spokesperson said.

    A former Love Island contestant from Sheffield has spoken about how she's been trolled on social media - days after former presenter Caroline Flack took her own life.

    Savanna Darnell, who was on the show in 2018, has told the BBC about her experiences of being trolled since appearing on the ITV programme.

    It comes after friends of Caroline Flack (above) asked people to "be kind" to others after she was trolled on social media.

    Ms Darnell (below) said: "It's really sad. I hope things change now. I knew I was on national TV and I was going to be out to the public, but I wasn't expecting the trolls and the horrible comments about my appearance."

    Ms Darnell said the comments on social media meant she ended up hating how she looked - stopping her from even leaving her house.

    "I came out stronger. Whoever's trolling should really think about what they're saying," she said.

    "I wish the help offered by Love Island should be put on you - you should be made to have that help. Some people feeling so down and low feel like they don't want any help to get better."
