  2. Fire-hit Wakefield bakery to closepublished at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2020

A Wakefield bakery hit by a "devastating" fire earlier this month is to close, it has been confirmed.

    The scene after the fire

The blaze at the Speedibake factory, in Colinsway, saw thick, black smoke pour across the city during the fire on 1 February.

Proposals have now been put forward for the site to close as the cost of reopening the site was "too great", the firm said.

The company says it explored many options to try and keep it open, but damage to the building meant none of them were viable.

A spokesperson said: "We know this announcement will be deeply upsetting for many people and we give our absolute commitment that, if the proposals are accepted, we will support those affected to help them find alternative employment."

Although a consultation period is ongoing and the company is open to alternative proposals, it added it had put a proposal forward to close the site.
