Prior to the pandemic, the new Waverley Junior Academy was scheduled to be completed and handed over to the Aston Community Education Trust at the end of July.

However, although construction work is continuing on the site where social distancing is observed, the school now looks likely to be opened in October instead.

Children who were due to attend the new school will instead begin the school year at nearby Thurcroft School, where they will be taught separately to Thurcoft pupils by their own teachers, and will will have separate breaks from the existing pupils.

The two schools will run as two separate academies within the same building.

Scarborough Council is asking for the information to help prepare a recovery plan for when the lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Questions include how many staff may have had to be furloughed or laid off and how long businesses can continue in the current climate if nothing changes.

The council said it has paid out more than £50m in government grants to businesses so far.

It added that it will use the information from businesses to get more specific support for them.

The questionnaire is on the council's website until Saturday 16 May, external.

But the local elections have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and instead councils are mounting an unheard of effort to try and help their taxpayers.

Extra hours, extra services, extra staff - it all costs extra money and councils in Yorkshire are worried about what may have to be cut in the future because of the necessary spending now.

They’ve estimated that this will all cost over £500m. To date, our councils have been given over £300m in grants from the government.

Now, all councils are estimating their costs in different ways. Some are using different timescales than others, some including what they think they’ll lose in income as well as their spending right now. The picture isn’t definitive at the moment.

But one thing is clear: there are serious worries about whether councils in Yorkshire will be able to balance the books.

The man was confronted by the group, who were also on bikes, as he was riding along the Calder and Hebble Navigation towpath on Tuesday evening.

DC Liam Rye said: “This was a nasty and cowardly assault by a group of up to eight males on a lone victim who was out for exercise.

“I would like to speak to anyone who was on the Horbury to Dewsbury towpath between 19:00 and 21:30, who saw this group of suspects, or who saw the attack itself at Millbank Lock."

It’s the call that means you’ve got to put some trousers on and tidy the shelves behind you..."Number 10 wants a question from Yorkshire at the daily press briefing".

    The briefingImage source, PA Media

There have been some regional questions at the briefings before, but Wednesday was the first time all of them came from journalists working in offices, or more likely small corners of houses, across the country.

The range of topics really showed what people care about. That’s because journalists working for local newspapers and for the BBC in towns and cities across the country are the ones who get their ears bent by members of the public.

Those vital conversations with people become our stories on BBC Look North, The Yorkshire Post and the Sheffield Star - and readers and viewers want the government to be held to account.

If questions about a six-year-old’s cancelled kidney transplant and whether councils have enough money to provide services sound very local - that’s because they are. Very proudly local.

They also provide answers to whether the government is delivering at a national level.

All public gatherings marking the 75th anniversary of the end of fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe in World War Two have been cancelled over the bank holiday weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, a series of events is still going ahead to mark the anniversary.

Speaking about tomorrow's celebrations, North Yorkshire's Assistant Ch Con Mike Walker said: “It's right on the 75th anniversary that we join together safely to remember those who played their part in bringing peace.

"However, it remains of utmost importance that people commemorate at home so we can protect the NHS and save lives."

"In this very different world, the greatest tribute you can pay our veterans is to stay at home - they went to war for us, the very least we can do is stay at home for them," he added.
