People are only allowed to visit the site if "absolutely necessary" and where waste can't be stored at home safely.

Tips were initially closed following the government's "stay at home" rules, but have reopened after residents told the council rubbish was building up at people's homes.

Only cars and small vans are allowed with one person per vehicle, the council said.

The sites will be open from 10:00 every day, but people are being told not to rush to the centres.

Richard Burton, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "We need residents to follow the strict new measures put in place in order to protect both those visiting and the staff on site – and only make the journey if it’s absolutely necessary.

"Please also be careful about when you choose to visit. We are expecting long waiting times so we’d ask residents to please be patient and please listen to any guidance from staff."

Growers said high pressure and sunshine meant bees have been more active and flowers had longer to be pollinated.

Cameron Smith, of Orchards of Husthwaite, said the blossoms were the best he had seen in 10 years.

The National Trust said the mild winter and warm weather meant apple blossom had appeared earlier than usual.

It cares for traditional apple orchards across the county, including at Beningbrough Hall, near York, and Nunnington Hall near Helmsley.

Nunnington Hall's head gardener Nick Fraser said: "Perhaps one of the reasons why this year's blossom seems so spectacular is that we're all paying closer attention to it, we're taking time to properly stop and look and reflect."
