Paul Turpin, councillor for the Gleadless Valley ward, has written to South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Sheffield Council urging them to apply for a grant from the government’s stations fund to reopen Heeley Station.

Councillor Turpin said: "It is an excellent location for a station and would provide a reliable and quick transport option for people to travel between Sheffield and Manchester.

"The original subway entrances are still there, just the station infrastructure needs putting back in place. People are proud of the built heritage in this area and reopening Heeley Station would undoubtedly be celebrated by locals."

The station first opened in about 1870 near Heeley Bridge, but after nearly 100 years it closed during the huge railway cutbacks in the 1960s known as the Beeching cuts.

The government is now investing £500m to reverse some of those cuts and has so far used £40m of the funds to build 10 new stations.

Councillor Turpin added: "I think we meet most of the criteria if the council is willing and capable to put in a good application, the public support for it is overwhelming."
