All routine appointments and operations were cancelled in March because of the outbreak.

Professor Russell Patmore, medical director at Hull and East Yorkshire's hospitals, says: "Getting back to normal is a really difficult thing to even think about. It's going to be many months, but could be into next year.

"At the moment we can probably do about half the number of CT scans in a day we could do before because of all the precautions we need to take."

Professor Patmore added: "While we're continuing to manage the crisis we're functioning at a level which is way below what we were running at before."

Textile artist Ian Berry, who is originally from Huddersfield, made the artwork using his trademark denim and first beamed it on to a building near his home in London.

The clapping hands image is based on a photograph of his own hands, taken by his six-year-old son Elliot.

"This all started because Elliot loves clapping. He gets so excited every Thursday night, he's started to see NHS workers as superheroes," says Mr Berry.

The image has now been seen across the UK, including on Edinburgh Castle, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead and at Canary Wharf.

In Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, it is projected on to the fire station while firefighters observe the "Clap for Carers" each Thursday.

Hull West and Hessle Labour MP Emma Hardy has written to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps after he was due to decide on proposed improvements to the Mytongate junction on the A63, off Castle Street, by the end of March.

Proposals include creating a split-level junction by allowing Ferensway and Commercial Street to cross the A63, and widening the eastbound carriageway between Princes Dock Street and Market Place to three lanes.

A decision is needed after weeks of delays due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to Ms Hardy.

"This has been on Grant Shapps' desk since 19 December. I understand he will have had other things to deal with, but Highways England are ready to go and now more than ever we need jobs and investment," she said.

"The area has waited a very long time for some of the issues of the A63 to be addressed.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport confirmed a decision on the proposed works on the A63 was among four which had been delayed.

A written statement from Mr Shapps said the deadline for a decision had been extended to 31 May.

A Transport for the North committee meeting heard services run by train operator Northern would rise from 45% of capacity to 63% next week.

But Nick Donovan, managing director of Northern, said social distancing would "impact the way we run services".

The meeting was told it could be many weeks before train services returned to normal, as the lockdown and social distancing rules meant staff were unable to take part in routine training.

A document entitled "Restoration of Full Timetable", which was presented to the meeting, warned of a potentially "different railway in future from pre-Covid-19" and expected "significant staff shortages" for weeks.

It also stated "great uncertainty regarding passenger demand and capacity requirements".

The assault happened in Lower Westfield Road at about 18:40 on Thursday 23 April when the victim, a man in his 40s, was attacked by two men with weapons.

The victim suffered a serious head injury and the suspects fled in a silver VW Passat.

Det Insp Mark Taylor says: "We have since identified two males who were in the area at the time of the attack and we are keen to identify them so we can progress our investigation.

“We believe people in the local community will know who these males are and would ask anyone with information about either, or both of them, to contact our detectives."

Anyone who may have overheard discussions about who was involved in the attack is also being asked to get in touch with police.

A 28-year-old man arrested in connection with this incident has since been released on bail pending further inquiries, police say.

  13. Social workers ask neighbours to share children concernspublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

People in Hull have been asked to share concerns about children and young people during lockdown.

Hull City Council launched the Worried About A Child? campaign with the NSPCC to ask people to watch for signs of abuse and neglect while communities are in lockdown.

These include continuous shouting, dirty clothes worn for days, and young children on their own.

The NSPCC said some families were already "pushed into crisis".

Since the pandemic began, referrals to Hull's Early Help and Safeguarding Hub have fallen by 15% on last year, while calls to the NSPCC have risen nationally.

Susan Knight, of the hub, said people must be alert for children "less visible" than normal.

Helen Westerman, of the NSPCC, said: "Keeping all children safe behind closed doors is a significant challenge during lockdown.

"It is down to all of us to speak up if we have concerns about a child."

The authority's chief executive, David Butterworth, said: "This is not the approach we are taking."

He added that he wanted people to remain in their local area, to avoid unnecessary travel.

But he said, as a public body, the authority was expected to deliver the government's message, so it would reopen authority-run car parks and try to reopen the toilets as soon as possible.

Mr Butterworth said: “Our message to visitors and residents over the next few weeks is around respect”.

The authority says it wants people to respect the land, the community, and each other by socially distancing.

Ian Bruce (above right), 56, who is the new club captain at Fulford Golf Club, says he hopes to play a game at the York course on Wednesday.

It comes as the government relaxes some rules on exercise as part of the lockdown restrictions, which includes allowing some sports, like golf, to resume if players observe social distancing measures.

Mr Bruce said: "I'm looking forward to seeing some friends. That's been difficult. I've been spending all the time with my wife, who's my best friend - but she doesn't know a huge amount about golf.

"I just can't wait to get back out there. Golf is extremely important to me, but there are far bigger issues globally at the moment. I walk the course daily and I think, 'I wish I was playing a shot from here', which has been pretty frustrating.

"Fulford is a very social golf club and I'm looking forward to seeing friends and checking that we're all in one piece."

He said he'd be "delighted" if he is be able to hit the ball with his first swing tomorrow after weeks of not playing.
