Craig Lee, managing director of the Tockwith-based brewery, said: "I have numerous family and friends who work for the NHS and can see the massive pressure they are under. I wanted to do something to help."

Mr Lee, whose wife used to work on the children’s ward at Leeds General Infirmary, says like many other breweries, the closure of pubs and restaurants has had a dramatic impact on its business.

“It has been a difficult few weeks and we don’t know when pubs will reopen," he said.

Home manager Adele Marples said: "This is the second time that Housteads has been targeted and the second time we have had our garden furniture stolen.

"I am angered and saddened that during such a difficult time for us all, someone feels this is acceptable behaviour towards those who are so vulnerable.

"I really do hope the people who thought this was the right thing to do enjoy sitting in their garden on their stolen property, knowing they have robbed some of the most vulnerable people in society."

Each care home will receive £15,000 to meet costs which have increased as they faced staff sickness, accepting short-notice admissions, PPE costs and an increased use of agency staff.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) has been allocated two grants from the government totalling £16.2m to support the additional costs associated with its response to Covid-19.

A further 60 beds may also be needed, as coronavirus impacts on the hospital system.

At a meeting of RMBC’s cabinet yesterday, councillors voted unanimously to grant care homes in the borough £15,000 each to help them deal with the costs of increased workforce pressures due to higher levels of staff absence caused by the outbreak.

Currently, there are 34 care homes for older people in Rotherham, with a total capacity of 1,657 beds in the independent sector.

There are also a further 120 beds across the two care homes operated by the council – Lord Hardy and Davies Court.

"He has many links to Bradford and we believe it's likely he's staying with friends somewhere in the city, possibly in the Holmewood or Bierley areas."

In March, the company announced it was planning to make a new type of ventilator, designed by university experts in Oxford and London, which could be built quicker and cheaper than most alternatives.

The design was being tested last month, but now the government says fewer ventilators are needed to treat patients with coronavirus.

Smith and Nephew said the plan to stop making the ventilators is "good news" as fewer patients in the UK require the treatment.

However, the firm added that the low-cost devices could still be made and sent to other countries "where needs are still pressing".

Mr Goodwill added: "At the moment, nothing is open apart from a few takeaways. There are no toilets and some of the car parks are shut.

Huddersfield-based Sporting Age has devised a series of challenges using everyday objects in a bid to get kids moving.

Primary school children have already been teaching themselves PE using items like rolled up bath towels, balls of socks and tins of beans.

The Stay At Home Challenge sees children tackle three different skills tests, including a speed bounce, a target throw and a fast feet challenge.

Their results can then be entered online giving each child a "sporting age" score.

Shaun Fox, from Sporting Age, said: "Lots of parents will be feeling the pressure of home schooling and wanting something to help. We’ve created simple videos that demonstrate exactly what to do to set everything up for the challenge.

"At the end of the challenge, the children will get their results so they can see for themselves the progress they have made."
