The government said it would look at getting some children back to school by as early as June.

However, Kirklees Council says it needs to "know a lot more" before it decides when students will be welcomed back to schools.

It's the latest authority to cast doubt over the government's ambition to have some year groups in classrooms by next month.

Council leader councillor Shabir Pandor said: "The truth is no one has yet decided that schools will reopen on 1 June.

"It’s a government ambition that depends on several factors. We need to know a lot more before we make a judgment that’s right for families, teachers and schools in Kirklees.

"Anyone who cares about the welfare of our children would be planning for their safe return to school. That’s exactly what we’re doing here in Kirklees.

"It could mean some children return to school on 1 June, or it might be later. Either way, we will be guided by the evidence, not the politics."

  11. Sheffield schools to 'work at right pace' to reopenpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 20 May 2020

Schools in Sheffield could start welcoming students back at different times during the coronavirus pandemic, the council has said.

    School childrenImage source, Getty Images

The government announced it would look at reopening some schools by as early as 1 June, depending on how the country reacts with lockdown restrictions being eased.

Although not every child will be able to go back to school straight away, key year groups would be the first to return.

Smaller class sizes, staggering break times and more frequent cleaning are some of the measures being discussed to limit the spread of the virus.

But in Sheffield, the council has said it's up to schools to decide when they feel it's safe enough to welcome students back.

Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, cabinet member for education and skills at Sheffield City Council, said: "All schools will need to undertake a comprehensive risk assessment, covering staffing levels, building layouts, and other issues that have an impact on safety.

"Based on these risk assessments, schools will be supported to welcome children back as soon as is safe should their parents wish to do so.

"This will mean that different schools and settings will need to work at the right pace for them and their children, and it could mean that not all schools are ready to do this on 1 June for all year groups mentioned in the government’s announcement."

He was followed by Ms Rennison, before the virus spread to the rest of the family.

Keri and Chris were due to get married on 18 July but the couple had to postpone their wedding until next year.

The decision by Calderdale Council’s ruling Labour group has come under fire from Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

Leader of the Conservative Group, Councillor Steven Leigh, said the council was going against expert advice issued by the government.

Councillor Leigh said the decision was made “behind closed doors” without consulting other groups.

He's calling on council leader Tim Swift and the Labour Cabinet to "focus on working alongside the other groups and central government to the benefit of Calderdale’s residents".

Meanwhile, Lib Dem group leader, Councillor James Baker said: “We are asked to trust the advice, but when we've not had sight of it and there seems there is no scientific consensus, it’s hard to know who to believe.

“The future of our children should not be decided behind closed doors with no democratic scrutiny," he added.

Five men, aged between 20 and 39, have subsequently been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and released under investigation, police say.

The shooting was a "targeted" attack, according to South Yorkshire Police, and came as three other shootings took place in the city on the same day.

Det Ch Insp Jamie Henderson said: "This incident was one of four shootings officers were called to in Sheffield that day. I want people to be reassured we are working hard to investigate all these offences.

"I would still like to hear from anyone who has information about any of those incidents, even if it seems like a small or insignificant detail," he added.

Customers will be able to book a time to visit a store as part of the new system which is being tested in Leeds.

Asda said it wanted to help people "juggling the demands of cooking more and having less time to shop for groceries" after returning to work.

Supermarkets have introduced measures such as direction signs, barriers, screens and access restrictions to ensure shoppers maintain social-distancing while buying their groceries.

This has led to scenes of customers around the country queuing 2m apart outside shops.

Asda says it will now test "virtual queuing" at its Middleton store (pictured), near its Leeds head office, as part of longer-term measures to deal with the crisis.

  20. MPs in government cash plea over future of Hull Trainspublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 20 May 2020

MPs are calling for Hull Trains to get government funding so it can start running services again and avoid going out of business.

    Hull TrainsImage source, PA Media

The train operator made the decision to stop running services after passenger numbers "dropped significantly" when the coronavirus lockdown came into force.

Hull’s three MPs have now written to the government asking it to provide financial support to the firm.

In a letter to transport minister Grant Shapps, they said without some financial help, the firm could "go out of business permanently", with the loss of 130 jobs.

Hull Trains is an open access operator and so does not qualify for any support package which other rail franchise operators can access, the letter added.

Diana Johnson, MP for Hull North, Emma Hardy, MP for Hull West and Hessle and Karl Turner, MP for Hull East, all signed the letter which was sent on Monday.

Hull Trains said the decision to halt services in March was based on the safety of crew and passengers, as well as "the commercial viability of running our trains with so few passengers".

It said: "At Hull Trains we continue to assess the situation based on advice from the government and - when we are in a position to resume services – will implement all necessary precautions for the safety of our crew and passengers to start running trains as soon as we can."
