Inmates at the Victorian jail spent the majority of the day in their cells for more than three months as staff looked to control an outbreak of Covid-19.

A report by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons Peter Clarke into the handling of outbreaks at HMP Leeds, HMP Winchester and HMP Thameside said: "Most prisoners at Leeds and many at Winchester shared Victorian cells, originally built to hold only one person. Poor enough in normal times, this was even more unacceptable when prisoners were locked up for almost all of the day in cramped conditions."

It also found that at Leeds staff punished poor behaviour by taking an individual’s access to a shower away for a day or two, something inspectors said "was not appropriate".

However, the report noted that it was "to the credit of staff and prisoners" that all remained "calm and well-ordered", despite the restrictions.

Mr Clarke said: “In the three prisons, we were struck by the commitment to maintaining the regime, albeit a very restricted one.

"However, we were concerned that there was little evidence of initiatives to relax the very restrictive regimes, and it was clear that prisoners were becoming increasingly frustrated and struggled to understand the disparity between what they were experiencing and what was happening in the community."

Anna Hartley, Wakefield Council’s director of public health, said: “We are aware of a small outbreak of Covid-19 at Urban House.

“A mobile testing unit is being set up at the site and we’re continuing to work closely with Mears Group, the Home Office and Public Health England to help limit any further potential spread.

“Please be reassured that the risk to those in the local area is very low, however, we ask everyone to please continue to follow government guidance on regular handwashing and social distancing to help keep yourself and others safe."

The £20,000-a-week player was stopped in his black Audi R8 after an officer saw him visit a garage, where he had stopped to buy cigarettes for a female friend, and speed away.

Philip Morris, prosecuting, said: "He drove off at considerable speed to the consternation of (the officer) who was heard to describe his speed as 'idiotic' during the course of the exchange at the roadside."

Mr Naylor died in 1983 as a result of burns injuries sustained at a house fire in Keighley more than two months earlier when helping to rescue five children trapped inside a house on Broomhill Walk. All five were rescued, but two later died from their injuries.

Mr Naylor told police from his hospital bed: “I picked up the child and suddenly there was a flashover and all went red. I was knocked over and fell downstairs because of the blast. I picked the child up again but there was another blast and I lost hold of her. I staggered downstairs and must have gone into the room where the fire was because I felt myself burning.”

He was later found collapsed in the hallway still holding the young girl before being helped out of the house.

Mr Naylor died in hospital on 10 July as a result of his injuries.

Writing on twitter WYFR said: "Today our thoughts are with Fireman Jeff Naylor and the sacrifice he made 37 years ago. RIP Jeff, never forgotten."

  16. Owls boss Gary Monk frustrated by misconduct verdict delaypublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 10 July 2020

    BBC Sport

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has said "it makes no sense" that the Championship club are still waiting on a verdict over a charge of misconduct.

    Gary MonkImage source, PA Media

The Owls were charged by the English Football League in November 2019.

The charge relates to "how and when" its stadium was sold to club owner Dejphon Chansiri, and the inclusion of the profits in their 2017-18 accounts.

Wednesday are seven points above the relegation zone with four games left and could face a points deduction.

"I can't control any of it and none of us can. I just have to try to set the team up to win games," Monk told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"From a logic point of view it makes no sense that it's gone on this long. It's not a good situation for anyone to be in.

"It's frustrating but the club are dealing with it."

Currently businesses with a rateable value over £51,000 cannot apply for a £25,000 grant from the government.

Sheffield BID is supporting the national #RaiseTheBar campaign to increase the threshold to £150,000.

It says it would provide vital support for 157 businesses in the city centre – and across the wider city as a whole up to 400 businesses could benefit.

The campaign says the industry is worth £635bn to the economy, but many places closed at the end of March as part of lockdown measures against the virus.

Mark Hobson, managing director of Corporation nightclub and a director at Sheffield BID, said: "It would make a massive difference at this point in time certainly from our point of view as far as the nightclub is concerned, we've been closed since Friday [20] March.

"We've not traded since. We've tried to reduce outgoings, but there are certain ones we can't reduce. Not being able to open and trade, we're just slowly edging towards that cliff."

  20. Leeds red-light zone review gives verdict on Managed Approachpublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 10 July 2020

A "managed" red-light zone in Leeds should not be scrapped, an independent review has concluded.

    Sex worker in leeds

The zone, set up in Holbeck in 2014, allows sex workers to operate between specified hours.

It aims to improve safety for sex workers and reduce the problems caused by street prostitution, but protests have been held by local residents worried about anti-social behaviour.

A University of Huddersfield review into how effective the city’s Managed Approach (MA) is, has suggested it stays in place.

Professor Jason Roach, who lead the review, said: "All the residents we interviewed showed sympathy towards on street sex workers and I was blown away by the empathy locals have - nobody said the support should be withdrawn."

Professor Roach contacted a number of UK police forces as part of the review and says: "The eight forces are basically doing the same as the MA.

"There was no panacea or silver bullet out there to get rid of the MA and substitute it with a new one - in fact the MA is leading nationally," he added.

The review findings are due to be considered by city council’s executive board on 20 July.
