The accident statistics were revealed after Councillor Angela Argenzio asked what Sheffield Council was doing to help cyclists navigate the tram tracks.

Councillor Bob Johnson, cabinet member for transport and highways, said temporary signs had been erected at places where cyclists had fallen off at tram tracks to warn them of the risks and to advise them to cross the tracks at a 90-degree angle.

He added: “Currently, an interactive cycle map is being developed to support cyclists in choosing cross-city routes which avoid the tram tracks."

People in York are being urged to stay at home on New Year's Eve to "help protect loved ones" due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    York Minster

With York and North Yorkshire now under tier three - very high alert - coronavirus restrictions, officials in the city say residents are reminded to see in 2021 "at midnight, at home".

The bells of York Minster will stay silent on New Year's Eve to help prevent gatherings in the city.

The landmark is traditionally a focal point for 31 December celebrations, with people meeting up outside to welcome in the new year.

In a statement, City of York council said: "To help stop the rising infection rates, City of York Council, North Yorkshire Police and York BID ask that everyone ends 2020 at home and that nobody gathers anywhere in the city on New Year’s Eve.

"The winter lights in the city will be switched off around the Minster overnight, bell-ringers will be following national guidelines and staying home, and between 20:00 and 08:00 the Minster chimes will be switched off."

Sharon Stoltz, director of public health at City of York Council, said: “Please do not gather in the city on New Year’s Eve or any other time.

"To do so would be to put loved-ones at risk and undo all our hard work and sacrifice."

Claire Throssell lost Jack and Paul, aged 12 and nine, when her ex-partner Darren Sykes set fire to his house. Mr Sykes also died in the blaze.

The children were on a weekend access visit after the family had split up.

Ms Throssell from Penistone, South Yorkshire, said news of the honour had "not quite sunk in yet".

"Although it's me accepting this MBE it's really the whole community MBE," she said.

"Especially for Women's Aid and for everybody that's picked me up these last six years. Without the community I wouldn't have been able to stand up and fight for other women and children."

Since her sons were killed in October 2014, the 48-year-old has campaigned for changes in the law to protect children caught up in domestic abuse cases.

Her efforts will see the introduction of a new Domestic Abuse Bill.

The new law will introduce measures such as preventing abuse victims being cross-examined by perpetrators in family courts, and giving children more of a voice in the process.

Kim Leadbeater, an ambassador for the Jo Cox Foundation, stepped up her work during the pandemic as millions faced losing their support networks.

Mother-of-two Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed by far-right extremist Thomas Mair on 16 June 2016.

She had been the Labour MP for Batley and Spen for just over a year when she was killed by Mair in Birstall in her West Yorkshire constituency.

After her sister's death, Ms Leadbeater threw herself into promoting causes Mrs Cox had been passionate about.

Ms Leadbeater founded the Great Get Together, a series of events in communities to help people create ties and help those who are lonely build support networks. During the pandemic these took place online.

She said: "I would have much preferred for my sister to be here carrying on the work she started on loneliness and so much else, but while this is sadly a bittersweet moment for our family, I know that Jo would be extremely proud."

In the face of rising coronavirus cases and mounting pressure on hospitals, NHS England told trusts before Christmas to start preparing to use the country’s seven Nightingale sites.

It comes as the number of coronavirus patients in England’s hospitals has hit a record high.

A spokesperson for NHS North East and Yorkshire said in a short statement that the 500-bed Nightingale at Harrogate Convention Centre “can take patients if required”, but did not comment on staffing.

Victoria Eaton, director of public health at Leeds City Council, previously described the potential of getting sufficient staff numbers as “incredibly challenging”.

Conservative MP John Redwood has also called on the government to explain why the Nightingales are not in use as health services struggle to keep up with the rising demand.

The Nightingale hospital in Harrogate cost £27m and was used for the first time in July when it began outpatient radiology appointments for non-coronavirus patients.

A spokesperson for NHS North East and Yorkshire said: “The Nightingale Hospital in Harrogate has been running a clinical imaging service since June with more than 3,000 patients receiving a diagnostic test or CT scan, and can take patients if required.”

From midnight tonight, York and North Yorkshire will be moved into tier three, meaning pubs and bars must close and people can't mix with other households or in private gardens.

Meanwhile, groups of no more than six people will be allowed to meet outdoors in public spaces, according to the rules.

Richard Flinton, chair of North Yorkshire's Local Resilience Forum, said he was sympathetic to hospitality businesses which he said will feel the "enormous" impact of closures over the New Year.

He added: "This is a key moment for us. This variant of the Covid-19 virus is more transmissible and therefore we have to be even more precautionary in terms of giving greater distance to one another, washing our hands and wearing face coverings.

"I am sure people will be concerned at this time, but I have absolutely every confidence that based our past history and actions we have taken together that we can once again bear down on the current situation to get a grip on the virus."

It comes after the announcement from health secretary Matt Hancock that North Yorkshire and York will join the rest of Yorkshire in tier three from Thursday.

Some areas of England were moved into tier four - the toughest level of the coronavirus alert system - following a review.

Dan Jarvis, mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said the work of councils, the NHS and people sticking to the rules had allowed South Yorkshire to remain in tier three.

He said: "Our collective contribution has made a big difference to the efforts to control the virus.

"While this a reprieve from the strictest measures on this occasion, there’s no doubt that we are facing a very tough January.

"I strongly urge everyone across South Yorkshire to celebrate New Year’s Eve safely, at home with their own household."

From midnight tonight, York and North Yorkshire will be moved into tier three, meaning pubs and bars must close and people can't mix with other households indoors or in private gardens.

Takeaway and collection services can remain open, with groups of no more than six people being allowed to meet outdoors in public spaces.

Sharon Stoltz, director for public health at City of York Council, said the move from tier two to tier three was necessary as the number of Covid-19 infections continued to rise.

She said: “We’ve come a long way together and made so many sacrifices. They have made a difference and saved lives.

"With those most at risk from coronavirus being vaccinated, there are reasons to be optimistic. While the vaccine is being rolled out we must all keep doing all we can to keep ourselves and those we love safe.

"We know this is a concerning and challenging time for people, especially those most at risk. By limiting our contacts and remembering hand, face, space we can keep ourselves and others safe," she added.
