An £80m government investment in flood defences for South Yorkshire is a "good start" but more is needed to fully protect the region, the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region (SCR) has said.
The money will help deliver up to 27 schemes, including natural flood management across the River Don catchment and schemes at Bentley (pictured during flooding in November 2019), Fishlake, Conisbrough and Tickhill in Doncaster.
But SCR Mayor Dan Jarvis has said a further £125m is needed to fully protect South Yorkshire and it's expected further lobbying of government departments will take place in the coming months.
Mr Jarvis, who's also Labour MP for Barnsley Central, said: “We all have in mind the hugely damaging floods that battered South Yorkshire in November 2019.
“I’m pleased that in collaboration with the Environment Agency, we have secured £80m from government towards funding some of our identified flood prevention and protection schemes.
“This is a good start, but I'm determined to secure the remaining £125m from government to fully protect homes and businesses in our region."

Staithes Coastguard has warned of a "significant landslip that has fallen onto the beach" at Runswick Bay.
It follows on from a partial cliff collapse three miles north of Runswick at Staithes.
The coastguard team is warning members of the public of the potential for further falls of rock and mud - and the possibility of people being cut off by the tide beyond the landslip site.
Visitors to the North Yorkshire coast are also being told to keep away from cliff edges and the base of cliffs "due to continued erosion".
Anyone who sees people in danger or further rock fall incidents is being asked to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

It's thought the men might have been involved in an "altercation" with people in a silver BMW, police say.
Three men, aged 18, 20 and 22, and a 44-year-old woman, have been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences.
They remain in custody at this time, South Yorkshire Police say.

Police in North Yorkshire will be "swift" to impose fines of £800 on people attending house parties as the Covid-19 pandemic continues, the county's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC) has said.
From yesterday, people have faced fines of £800 for attending a house party of more than 15 people in England.
Julia Mulligan, North Yorkshire's PFCC, said: "If people are clearly flouting the rules, the police will enforce.
"So encouragement and explanation will be limited, I suspect, and enforcement will be pretty swift."
Meanwhile the chair of North Yorkshire's Police Federation says the vast majority of his members are "completely aghast people are putting them and their families at additional risk, because of a selfish impulse to have a house party".
Rob Bowles says: "I think there is a degree of complete incredulity really. Our members are out on the front line putting themselves and their famiies at risk of infection every day during the pandemic.
"They do that in order to keep the public safe, so I think there is some anger and some frustration."
The first large-scale Covid-19 vaccination centre in West Yorkshire has opened today.
The centre, based at Spectrum Community Health on Navigation Walk in Wakefield, is the first of the region’s four centres to open.
The other centres in West Yorkshire will be at Jacobs Well in Bradford, the John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield and Elland Road in Leeds.
In the first instance, people aged 75 and over within a 45-minute drive of the centre will receive a letter from the national NHS booking service inviting them to book a vaccination.
In a statement, Spectrum said: "We know lots of people will be eager to get protected but you will be invited for a vaccine when it’s your turn.
"Please do not contact your practice, the NHS, or indeed Spectrum, to request an appointment."

Read MoreDan Jarvis, the mayor of the Sheffield City Region (SCR), says he will donate his £80,000-a-year salary to good causes and charities across the area.
Following the implementation of a devolution deal for South Yorkshire, an independent panel suggested Mr Jarvis should be paid an annual salary of £79,500 for his role.
But the SCR head, who is also Labour MP for Barnsley Central, said he would be giving away his salary instead.
The mayor had been working with no salary for his mayoral work for over two years due to the incomplete devolution deal.
In a meeting between the mayor and South Yorkshire's council leaders, Mr Jarvis also said he would not be implementing a mayoral precept that would add a bill onto residents’ council tax to pay for services.
Mr Jarvis said: “I said in my manifesto I would not be introducing a mayoral precept - and I’m sticking to that.
"In the midst of the pandemic, there is already a massive financial strain on people and communities across South Yorkshire and I am not going to add to that burden."

A blue BMW 320 and a blue tipper truck were in collision on the A6201 roundabout between Avenue Lodeve and Sprockhovel Way, Hemsworth, at about 10:15 on Saturday 23 January, according to West Yorkshire Police.
A woman in her 20s suffered "serious injuries" in the incident, police said.

People have moved a number of traffic cones and pump equipment to get past a road closure in a flood-hit North Yorkshire town.
Pipes were among the items moved to allow people to cross County Bridge in Malton at the weekend.
The bridge was closed as the River Derwent reached record levels in the town last week after Storm Christoph hit the UK.
Although the "stable but fragile" situation was improving, council leader Keane Duncan said, the County Bridge remained closed for safety reasons while teams worked to pump water away in order to protect nearby properties.
He said people interfering with equipment "doesn't appear to have had any serious consequences, but it could have been a different story".
An Environment Agency spokesperson added: "It's incredibly important people continue to adhere to road closures and steer clear of the pumps and pipes so we can continue to reduce local flood risk."
People have been urged to stay away from a cliff on the North Yorkshire coast after part of it slipped into the sea.
Steps down to Port Mulgrave beach, south of Staithes, have been left dangling and leading to nowhere after heavy rain at the weekend caused a landslide. The steps have since been taped off.
Staithes Coastguard Rescue team said it was alerted by Humber Coastguard following a call from a local resident.
"We currently urge visitors to not attempt to descend the cliff to access Port Mulgrave", Staithes Coastguard said.
The coastguard is advising people to "stay away from the base of the cliff the same distance as the cliff height, and to remain on designated cliff paths away from cliff edges".
It says due to recent heavy rainfall and freezing conditions many areas of the coastline are suffering from erosion.

Anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident is being urged to contact officers.
Det Inspector Steve Smith said: “I completely understand people may be concerned following this incident, we have officers in the area who are there to listen and speak to you."
The South Yorkshire force says there will be "an enhanced police presence in Conisbrough" over the next few days.
Distinctive antiques and paintings were among £8,000 worth of items stolen in a burglary in West Yorkshire, police say.
Thieves forced open a window at a property on Albert Road in Saltaire between 30 December 2020 and 21 January 2021 and then searched inside, according to West Yorkshire Police.
During the robbery, items in excess of £8,000 were taken, including original artwork by famous Leeds artist Phillip Naviasky, police said.
Other items included a bespoke 22-carat wedding ring, an 18-carat gold chain necklace and Victorian cocktail glasses, perfume bottles and vases.
Police are appealing for anyone who recognises either of the paintings shown above to get in touch.
