The show's organisers previously announced it would return this year, however it is still dependent on the government’s "road map" out of Covid restrictions remaining unchanged.

Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS) says it believes there will be a cap on the number of people allowed to gather at large events.

Adding a fourth day means more visitors will have the chance to attend safely, YAS says.

The 2021 event is now due to take place between 13-16 July, YAS has revealed.

In 2020, the the Harrogate-based show was cancelled in full due to the coronavirus pandemic - the first time since the foot-and-mouth outbreak in 2001.

The Easter bank holiday will mark the first weekend since the third national lockdown began on 5 January that people can now leave home without a reasonable excuse.

As a result, officials are expecting an influx of visitors to North Yorkshire’s national parks, beauty spots and coastal towns, with outdoor gatherings of up to six people or two households also now allowed.

Richard Webb, North Yorkshire County Council's director of health and adult services, says people should "make the most" of the relaxed rules, but he urges them to “treat communities as you would wish your community to be treated”.

Mr Webb has told a briefing of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum: "Hands, face, space and fresh air – that is what we all need to remember.

"And when it comes to space, North Yorkshire has more than any other part of England, so please make the best use of that. Spread out, stay local, discover the quiet places and avoid the crowded ones.

"Show respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for communities. That respect means all of us being careful as we enjoy some of our newly-restored freedoms," he added.

Two males, both 17, who subsequently attended hospital have been treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries "consistent with having been assaulted with weapons", police said.

Andy Fox, Lincolnshire County Council’s assistant director for public health, says people need to remember “we are still in a global pandemic”.

This week, lockdown restrictions have been slightly relaxed , including allowing people to meet others outdoors in groups of six or two households, as well as take part in outdoor sports.

Mr Fox says it's too early to see the impact of the move, but that it's a positive that people have a chance to go out in the good weather.

However, he adds: "My area of concern is how behaviour changes as a result of that. We really want to appeal to people to remember we’ve only had the rule of six in use outdoors and with outdoor sport allowed it doesn’t mean we should be mixing indoors.

"That’s absolutely a bad idea at this point. There’s too much Covid circulating right now to really lift the brakes off and see a big increase, because it will spread fast."

He adds there is always a risk of a third wave, as is the case currently in Europe - but says things such as border controls and vaccinations are helping to prevent that in the UK where the numbers are “going the other direction”.

“So, get active, do have some fun, but stick to the guidance we have in place and keep working hard to save lives,” he adds.

As the sun rises over Woodhouse Moor in Leeds, the early morning joggers and skateboarders are stopping to get out their phones and capture the sea of rubbish stretching across the park’s gentle slopes.

Despite multiple ‘no litter’ signs along the park’s tree-lined paths, the turf is covered by glass beer bottles, crisp packets, discarded ‘bags for life’, used disposable barbeques and nitrous oxide canisters.

The first Leeds City Council workers to arrive have already filled four hay bale-sized bags of litter, with a busy morning ahead.

With temperatures set to reach 20 degrees by 15:00 today, they may be facing a similar task tomorrow.
