    Gary AllenImage source, Humberside Police

Gary Allen was found guilty last week of killing mother-of-three Samantha Class in Hull in 1997, and mother-of-four Alena Grlakova in Rotherham in 2018.

Allen had been cleared of the murder of Ms Class in 2000, but this acquittal was overturned in 2019 after new evidence was presented to Appeal Court judges.

A jury heard harrowing details of how the body of 29-year-old Ms Class, who was working in the sex industry, was found by children on the banks of the Humber in October 1997.

Prosecutors said she had been "brutally murdered" as she had been stamped on, strangled with a ligature and run over with a car.

Ms Grlakova's body was found naked in a stream in Rotherham in April 2019, four months after she was last seen, on Boxing Day 2018.

    She had been strangled.

She was from Slovakia and moved to the UK in 2008 but, after becoming estranged from her husband and starting work in the sex industry, she met Allen at a bus stop.

Allen denied killing either of the women but was found guilty of two counts of murder after two days of deliberation by a jury which had heard eight weeks of evidence.

The Woodland Trust says plans to build 4,000 properties on the The Prince William of Gloucester Barracks site in Grantham threaten 67,000 trees

The charity, which is based in the Lincolnshire town, has urged local residents to object to the proposals.

The Diamond Jubilee Wood's first trees were planted in 2012 as the Queen marked 60 years since her coronation.

Two years later, Princess Anne visited the site as the final sapling was put in the ground.

Oliver Newham, from the trust, said the new homes scheme would result in about 80% of the woodland being "ripped out" if it was approved.

"It is really troubling to us," he said.

Homes England acknowledged a "significant number of existing smaller trees" would need to be removed to accommodate the scheme, which also includes retail, community and commercial spaces, along with "extensive parkland and woodland areas".

The consultation on the proposals, external is due to end on Friday.

  15. Car cruising ban consultation in Scarboroughpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A council is considering continuing a ban on car cruising events on Scarborough’s seafront.

    Scarborough

The ban was imposed in 2018 after a number of incidents, and Scarborough Council is asking for comments on it in a consultation.

Car Cruising sees enthusiasts meet up and travel to a set location to show off their vehicles.

One of the largest events saw hundreds of cars congregate on Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive in the town’s North Bay.

Roads in the seaside town were damaged and left with tyre rubber on the surface in 2017.

It was also thought the cars could pose a risk to pedestrians and some participants were speeding and creating a disturbance.

Fines of up to £1,000 can be handed out to anyone breaking the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

It means any driver in a group of two or more who is posing a risk to other road users, playing loud music or is deemed to be taking part in anti-social behaviour could fall foul of the legislation.

The council consultation, external document concludes: “It is the view of North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire County Council and Scarborough Borough Council that the PSPO needs extending in order to prevent the recurrence of the significant issues caused by this activity prior to the current PSPO being implemented in 2018.”

  19. Allotment holders in Kirklees Council bullying claimspublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Allotment holders in West Yorkshire say they have been "bullied" and had plants sprayed with weed killer in an ongoing council row.

    Allotments

Campaigners at Cemetery Road Allotments, Huddersfield, were told some land was being cleared to make way for a school, Kirklees Council said.

Plot holders said plants were sprayed with weed killer and alternative allotments offered were "sub-par".

The council said allotment holders had been warned to move belongings and plants ahead of work starting there. It said it had "offered every assistance" to help people move.

In 2020, the Court of Appeal ruled in the council's favour following a two-year fight by campaigners to save the land.

A £9.7m primary school is set to be built on the site, prompting the removal of 32 plots.

Plot holder Debby Fulgoni, said: "We've been bullied off the ones at the top and the other allotment holders, who've lost the will to fight any more, have been moved to substandard plots that they're still trying to get the council to sort out."

Kirklees Council said it had told allotment holders about work starting at the site from 26 April and had asked them to remove their belongings from the area.
