  3. Girls swept out to sea on inflatable toy near Cleethorpespublished at 08:03 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

Two girls have been rescued from the sea near Cleethorpes after being swept about 400m out to sea on a blue inflatable snake.

    HM Coastguard vehicle

The girls were spotted by a member of the public between Fuller Street bridge and Grimsby Docks at about 17:00 on Monday.

Cleethorpes Coastguard said the pair were quickly reached by a lifeboat crew and guided back to the shore.

A spokesman said: "They were two young local girls that had come to beach without any adults and decided they wanted to play in the sea with their inflatable.

"They had absolutely no idea whatsoever what danger they had put themselves in."

The coastguard added that inflatable toys "are not designed to be used on the sea or any other tidal waters" and warned the River Humber has "very strong currents, which will very quickly wash you out to sea".

  6. Plan to bring 'masterpiece' Leeds building back to lifepublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 27 July 2021

    BBC Radio Leeds

Transforming one of Leeds's most historic buildings into part of the British Library could bring an extra 500,000 visitors a year to the city, according to a report.

    Temple WorksImage source, Google

Temple Works in Holbeck, which dates back to 1836, was built as a textile mill, but it is now derelict after attempts to bring it back into use came to nothing.

Later this week, West Yorkshire Combined Authority is expected to agree to spend £5m as part of investigation work into the feasibility of opening a British Library site in the building. If successful, almost £20m more could be made available to make the library a reality.

The building's facade has been described as "a masterpiece of the Egyptian revival" by Marcus Binney from SAVE Britain's Heritage.

"The whole area is coming back to life," said Marcus. "Value is being created; uses are being generated. So this whole quarter of Leeds, which is very forgotten at the moment, will come to life."

West Yorkshire Combined Authority will discuss the plans on Thursday.

  13. Claims leisure centre could suffer 'catastrophic collapse'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 27 July 2021

    BBC Radio York

There is a warning that Ripon's new leisure centre and swimming pool could suffer a 'sudden catastrophic collapse'.

It comes in a letter from the Principal of the City of Ripon Trust to Harrogate Borough Council about the unstable nature of the ground at Camp Close.

Stanley Mackintosh says one of his main areas of concern is that pumping further grout underneath the buildings could cause cavities to move and expand.

Earlier this month leading geologist and town planner Dr Alan Johnson also wrote to the council to raise his concerns about subsidence dangers.

It follows the discovery of a cavity below ground during ongoing works at the site.

Ripon is prone to sinkholes because it sits above a layer of gypsum, a water-soluble rock which leads to the formation of large underground caves.

Harrogate Borough Council says it has employed qualified and experienced geologists and geo-technic engineers to carry out necessary investigation works at the leisure centre site, and more than 3,000 tonnes of grout which, along with the casting of a reinforced concrete slab, provides the foundation for the new swimming pool building.

Former diver and Swim England talent officer Suzie Collins has told BBC Radio Leeds: "There's a really strong legacy of diving in the city.

"In diving, we go out to schools to search for the talent and we look for strong flexible young athletes with good lines outside of the pool.

"Because of Covid, we're doing a virtual talent search this year where people can send videos of themselves doing some of the specific exercises that we would do in school."

Debris was flung from the blade as it broke at Park Spring Wind Farm near Darfield, Barnsley, on March 12.

Councillor Kevin Osborne initially wrote to EDF Renwables, the turbine owner, calling for a safety investigation following the incident.

However, the blade is still hanging from the turbine and has not yet been fixed.

Mr Osborne said: “EDF have quite rightly cordoned off the area because even now, parts of the blade still remain dangling from the tower.

“I have to say, it is an indication, and a really poor advert for the future of renewable energy in the country.

“An increasing part of the energy supply of our country is coming from renewables, and if they can’t get it right, and they can’t keep it safe, then we have to question, is this the way ahead.”

EDF Renewables have been contacted for a comment.
