A man caught hare coursing has been found guilty of hunting offences after releasing dogs onto brown hares in Goole.

    Hull Magistrates' CourtImage source, Google

Adam Brown, of Princes Street in Doncaster, pleaded guilty to an offence under the Hunting Act 2004 at Hull Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The court heard how, on Sunday 21 March, Brown and two juveniles entered farmland near Rawcliffe Bridge, Goole, and intentionally released dogs onto brown hares, allowing the dogs to pursue the animals.

Brown was ordered to pay a £120 fine, as well as court costs and a victim surcharge.

PC Rich Fussey said: “We are working hard to combat wildlife crime and this conviction further demonstrates our commitment to dealing with and prosecuting offenders that come to our area to commit hare coursing.

"I would like to thank local members of Farmwatch for their assistance and partnership during the incident which has resulted in another conviction for hare coursing in Humberside."

Martin Patterson from St George's Crypt said: "It's one thing to put a roof over someone's head but sometimes they need more support than that and can often fall back into chaos, so this service provides people with help while they get back on their feet.

"The building is named after Don Robins, who was the vicar of St George's Church during the 1930s. He helped many people through tough times - it's in honour of him."

  5. Keighley mosque urges young people to 'grab a jab'published at 10:39 British Summer Time 4 August 2021

A West Yorkshire mosque where thousands of people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 is now urging young people to help the whole community get over the “final hurdle”.

    Man receives vaccine

The Central Mosque in Keighley runs vaccination sessions three times a week and is the main hub for a team which has delivered 71,000 vaccines in recent months.

However, it is claimed the long queues seen at the start of the year have now “tailed off” – and the team is especially keen to encourage 18 to 24-year-olds to come for their jabs.

Latest figures suggest only 49% of that age group in Bradford have had their first dose, compared with 66% in nearby Wakefield.

Lois Brown, who manages the community vaccination programme, said: “Young people sometimes think, ‘oh I have had Covid, I don’t need a vaccine’. Well, actually, you do.

“We are at the final hurdle - and at this time in the summer, when young people are generally free and out of education, come down and have a vaccine. It literally takes two minutes, we haven’t got big queues, and you’ll be protected.”

The Grade II-listed former prep school would be transformed into a cafe with a public park in Minster Yard.

The Minster states it costs £22,000 a day to run the famous cathedral and it needs to create new revenue streams.

In June, it posted a £2.3m loss due to the impact of the Covid pandemic on visitor numbers in 2020-21.

The proposals are part of a wider plan to improve the area around the gothic cathedral.

In its planning application, the Minster said the alternative to not implementing the plan would leave it facing a "financial cliff" in terms of funding.

The independent Minster School, which provided choristers for the cathedral, was closed in 2020 due to financial difficulties exacerbated by the pandemic.

  15. Featherstone Rovers docked points over Covid-19 breachpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 3 August 2021

    BBC Sport

Championship side Featherstone Rovers have been docked two competition points and fined £10,000 after a breach of operational rules relating to indoor gatherings during the pandemic.

    Featherstone RoversImage source, PA Media

The Rugby Football League say they came to an agreed decision with Rovers.

Rovers were found to have held a gathering in March between players - a breach of national restrictions.

Players that should have isolated under the Covid-19 protocols then took part in April's 28-18 win over Batley.

"Featherstone Rovers are deeply disappointed with the RFL's outcome from its investigation into an alleged social gathering at the club in March of this year," the club said in its own statement., external

"The outcome is particularly disappointing given that the club had satisfied both West Yorkshire Police's investigation and a local authority hearing, both of whom conceded that the club had not knowingly been uncooperative."

The penalty, two points, reflects the benefit Rovers gained by beating Batley, and the RFL believes the punishment also reflects "the club's failure to properly comply with the law, operational rules and the RFL investigation."

Scientists want to use cannabinoid-containing Sativex with chemotherapy against recurrent glioblastoma.

The trial, led by the University of Leeds and co-ordinated by a specialist research unit at the University of Birmingham, is due to begin recruiting more than 230 patients at 15 hospitals across the UK in early 2022, following a "promising" first phase involving 27 patients., external

  19. First boat in 90 years uses restored canal lockpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 3 August 2021

A canal boat has passed through a Georgian canal lock for the first time in 90 years after a three-year restoration project.

The Three Shires trip boat passed through the formerly derelict Lock 14 at Stenwith, near Grantham, at 11:00 today.

The Canal & River Trust, Grantham Canal Society and the Waterway Recovery Group have been working together to rebuild the lock since 2018.

Volunteers removed and rebuilt the lock walls by hand, with new oak lock gates - made at Stanley Ferry, near Wakefield - fitted into the restored lock chamber - the first new gates the lock has had in almost 90 years.

The scheme was awarded £830,500 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to bring locks 14 and 15 back into use.

The project has already seen the full restoration of Lock 15 which was officially reopened in September 2019.

Phil Mulligan, regional director for the Canal & River Trust, said: "This has been a monumental effort from everyone involved. The lock’s looking incredible, back to it’s best."

He added: "It’s a really inspirational project and we’re so grateful for all the efforts of the volunteers and the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund."
