  6. Dialogue with Taliban in 'national interest' - Ex-Para MPpublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 16 August 2021

Dan Jarvis, South Yorkshire Mayor and Labour MP for Barnsley, has said it's in the "national interest to have ongoing dialogue with the Taliban".

    Dan Jarvis

On Sunday, the Taliban declared victory after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled abroad and his government collapsed.

There have been scenes of panic at Kabul airport as desperate residents try to flee following the seizure of the Afghan capital.

Mr Jarvis, an ex-paratrooper who served in Afghanistan, told the BBC: "We have to accept there's a new normal now in Afghanistan and although it is a bitter pill to have to swallow, we're going to have to engage with the new administration in Kabul. It's in our national interest to do so.

"The first priority is to complete the ongoing military evacuation. Hundreds of soldiers, including from my own old regiment, are currently in Kabul doing everything to recover British passport holders and other entitled personnel.

"Very quickly after, the diplomatic process has to be on averting a humanitarian disaster."

Mr Jarvis predicted "a real prospect that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people will seek to leave the country with a possibility of a refugee crisis which could be very destabilising for the region."

He said the UK government, working with international partners "has to have an ongoing dialogue with the Taliban, to try to avert a humanitarian disaster".

He told BBC Breakfast: "We must minimise the impact on the population of Afghanistan - not least all those women and girls we've invested so much over the years in trying to protect."
