Doncaster is to apply for city status under the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Mayor Ros Jones said it will be the town's fourth attempt to be recognised as a city but that "we believe the time is right".
"Lots of people I meet already think we are a city – and we are in all but name," she said.
"We think, look and behave like a city and we have so much more than a lot of cities already including an international airport, a wildlife park, a racecourse, historic and modern architecture including only one of three Mansion Houses in the country – our people, communities and businesses and innovators – there is so much to share.
“I know Doncaster is already on the map for so many brilliant things and certainly this royal stamp of approval will boost our fortunes even further.”
The Queen is due to confer city status on one or more towns in 2022 to mark her 70-year reign.
Doncaster, which has a population of about 110,000, will submit its bid alongside other towns by 8 December then government ministers will make their recommendations, with the final decision made by the Queen.
A man has been fined after admitting a campaign of threatening behaviour against Great Grimsby Conservative MP Lia Nici.
Nicholas Burrows, 49, pleaded guilty at Grimsby Magistrates' Court to using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards the MP.
Ms Nici said Burrows, the friend of a neighbour, had become "obsessed with harassing me".
She said he had made her and her family's lives "miserable".
Burrows, 49, of Cartledge Avenue, Grimsby, was fined £400 when he appeared before a district judge on 19 October.
He admitted offences between 30 July and 2 August this year, but Ms Nici claimed it had gone on for much longer.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ms Nici, who was elected in 2019, said Burrows' actions would not stop her carrying out her duties.

West Yorkshire's mayor says the government is taking too long to "level-up" the country.
In today's Budget, the chancellor announced £830m will be spent on transport in West Yorkshire.
However, Labour's Tracy Brabin has pointed out there is still no news about the future of the planned HS2 line to Leeds, or plans for a faster rail line between Leeds, Bradford and Manchester.
Ms Brabin said: "Both projects are vital to improving connections between the great cities of the North and Midlands. We’re told they are coming soon, but the watered-down versions that are rumoured are not acceptable."
Four projects in our area - including the new Halifax swimming pool - have also been awarded money from a new £1.7bn "levelling-up fund".
The chancellor says this fund is about investing "in the infrastructure of everyday life".
The money has been welcomed by the mayor, although she says "more sustained, flexible and longer term funding" is what is really required.
