The Fattorini jewellery business is shutting down as its current boss retires.

There is no-one from the family to take over running it, so Anthony Fattorini is closing the doors for the final time this week.

The business was started by his great-great-grandfather, Antonio (pictured above), who travelled from Italy to Yorkshire when Queen Victoria was a child, establishing a shop in Harrogate in 1831.

Anthony Fattorini said: "My two children have chosen not to do it. I suppose nowadays people have much more career choice than they did.

"So it's time to close the business. It's been a pleasure to serve many customers in that time and to be a part of their lives."

PC Stephen Wales was knocked down while on patrol on Westgate in July this year. Fourteen months on, he is unable to walk properly.

PC Wales says: "I've got two young girls. A six-year-old and four-year-old and I honestly thought that night, that those two girls would be left without a dad.

"I was just in extreme pain. Pain that I can't describe. And all I wanted to do at that point was go home and see my children."

Karolina Serafin, 25, crashed her car into Stephen and two others when she was twice the legal limit. In November she was jailed for three years and eight months.

According to the latest figures, more than 140 drivers have been arrested by West Yorkshire Police since the start of December.

Ch Insp Katy Woolmason told BBC Radio Leeds: "To drink or take drugs before you drive - you could collide with somebody and ultimately kill somebody."

Almost 500,000 people have come forward for their third coronavirus vaccination in the last week across West Yorkshire alone.

Yvette Oade, from the NHS, told BBC Radio Leeds: "It's been really positive to see people coming forward, especially those who were reluctant to get their vaccine.

"What worries me is that there are still people who didn't come forward in the first place for a vaccine.

"The offer for a jab still remains. It's an evergreen offer, so if you've not had a first or a second dose, it's not too late to come forward."

Long queues were initially reported outside vaccine centres but Ms Oade said these had now gone down.

"We're a well-oiled machine now and there's no 15-minute wait after each vaccine either," she added.

The scheme would see biomass burnt to produce heating for the City Hall, Alhambra Theatre and Bradford Magistrates Court.

It was expected to reduce carbon emissions in the city by 12,600 tonnes over its lifetime.

A meeting of Bradford Council was told that the project was “currently suspended” due to recent changes to government funding for such large-scale projects.

The council had committed £6.9m to the scheme and a site for the generating station had been identified in the city centre.

A council spokesperson said: “Due to a change in the funding regime, we need to review our original plans for how the District Heat Network produces and delivers heat, as well as the finance arrangements.

“We are currently looking into the best way to carry out this review.”

The call came from a councillor during a meeting of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority after it was claimed that number of recent fires were a result of cannabis farms being set up in properties.

Conservative councillor Mike Pollard said: “A significant number of domestic fires seem to be connected to people who have been ‘creative’ with the supply of electricity.”

He asked whether the fire service linked fires caused by this illegal electricity use to cannabis farms.

Scott Donegan, area manager for prevention and response, said as a fire service their main objective was safety, rather than targeting criminals.

He added: “Occupants are not always very forthcoming, and it is not always something we get involved in.

"We can help police build profiles for some homes, and we do get involved in planned events with police sometimes.”

Lib Dem councillor Jeanette Sunderland said that public needed to be warned about the fire danger.

“Sometimes people can be a bit cautious about reporting neighbours, but you have to get the message out that a cannabis farm next door can put your property at risk," she said.
