  1. How killer couple were caught by their own CCTVpublished at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2022

During the trial jurors heard how much of the abuse inflicted on Sebastian was captured on CCTV cameras inside the family's home in Huddersfield.

    Daniel Lee

Following their conviction Daniel Lee, from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), described the footage as "something you'll never forget".

"It's so unusual to have, first of all, CCTV cameras inside a house, and secondly, that CCTV showing a young boy being tortured and subjected to a catalogue of physical and mental abuse, ill treatment and neglect" he said.

"That footage is harrowing and you can't really prepare for it.

"The emotional distress watching a defenceless 15-year-old boy being tortured to death is something that once you see, you'll probably never forget.

"It's not something I've ever come across before whereby the ultimate downfall of somebody's crimes have been captured on footage."

With the sentencing being filmed, a message has been read out in court by the court clerk.

In it, she said Mrs Justice Lambert, the judge, would be filmed after allowing the single camera into the room. Nobody else is allowed to film, take pictures, or broadcast audio of the sentencing.

She said: "Filming will not impact the proceedings."

It's a very busy court room here in Leeds today, where, shortly, Kalinowska and Latoszewski will be sentenced.

The couple are sat in the dock with a Polish interpreter and flanked by prison staff. Latoszewski is wearing a grey, tracksuit while Kalinowska is wearing a black EA7 top with white writing.

Meanwhile, the hearing is being streamed to a court in Poland, where Sebastian's father, Jacek, is watching on.

Prosecutor Jason Pitter KC said a statement from Mr Kalinowski will be read out in court later.

During the trial the court heard Sebastian arrived in the UK from Poland in October 2020 to live with Kalinowska and her partner, Latoszewski, in Huddersfield.

However, the arrangement quickly turned sour, with one family friend telling jurors they believed the couple came to view him as a "hindrance".

Over the following months Sebastian was repeatedly beaten by the couple and subjected to cruel and humiliating punishments.

CCTV cameras installed inside the couple’s home in Leeds Road captured much of the abuse.

In one 30-minute recording Latoszewski could be seen hitting Sebastian more than 100 times, stopping at one point to prevent him from covering his face.

While the beating took place Kalinowska sat nearby eating toast and watching TV.

Sebastian eventually died on 13 August as a result of an infection caused by “untreated complications of multiple rib fractures”.

  5. Why can we watch the sentencing?published at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2022

Today’s sentencing is the first to be broadcast live outside of the Old Bailey, in London, and only the third ever to be televised in England.

Filming in crown courts in England and Wales was brought in in July, though Scotland has already been doing it for many years.

The thinking is that if the public could see the judiciary process, they could have more confidence in the system.

In England and Wales though, only four organisations can film: the BBC, ITN, Sky and PA Media and they have to apply to the judge to film the sentencing remarks of a case.

Even then, they can only film the remarks made by the most senior judges.

No-one else can be filmed apart from them.

Shortly, you will be able to watch Mrs Justice Lambert’s sentencing remarks from start to finish.

You won’t see anything apart from the judge and there is a delay on the feed. There may be moments when the feed is stopped, due to sensitive matters or if something happens inside the courtroom.
