    There's a special exhibition at Newarke Houses Museum for the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

    In display are videos, letters and photographs of local soldiers.

    Philip French is the Curator of Leicester History and says: "Half of these were very young lads, young soldiers who went out and fought for their country. When you look at the sheer numbers involved, it's absolutely staggering. 

    "Hopefully by coming along and remembering the experience of the soldiers their memory will live on."

    The first time the Leicester Tigers Regiment took part in the Battle of the Somme was on 14 July in a battle to take the important Bazentin Wood. 

    Regiment historian Richard Lane says many thought they didn't have a chance.

    He said: "Two-and-a-half days of very heavy fighting took place in the wood. Our casualty list was 1,947 men - about half of the Leicestershire brigade.

    "How many people died wounded after we don't really know but it was probably a substantial amount of people."

    These two men will be sentenced later today for their involvement in the murder of Kayleigh Haywood...

    Stephen Beadman raped and killed the 15-year-old from Measham last November. 

    Luke Harlow groomed her online and lured her to his flat in Ibstock, where they had illegal sexual activity.

    Both were also found guilty of false imprisonment by a jury.

    The whistle was blown by David Middleton at the Bottesford World War One centenary.

    He says their village had quite a role in the war: "We know that over 200 served, 42 were killed and five were killed on the Somme between the July and the October.

    "The first person to be killed was Clifford Miller and he died on the first day."

    Ahead of the cathedral service the Dean of Leicester has spoken of his personal connections to the Battle of the Somme.

    The Very Revd David Monteith says: "Over a million people died at the Battle of the Somme. Like so many, my own family experienced loss. One hundred years on we still mourn their passing. 

    "By sombre reflection we will seek wisdom to live in a world that perhaps still under appreciates the gifts and the costs of peace."

    There'll be a service held at Leicester Cathedral at 10:00 to remember the beginning of the Battle of the Somme where 2,000 people from Leicestershire died.

    The fire service are at a derelict factory in Frog Island since just before 01:00 this morning.

    There were five fire engines there overnight but that's now been reduced to one.
