Almost 10% of people in Leicester have diabetes, which compares with 5% nationally
Black and minority ethnic groups are particularly affected and free health sessions are being held for these communities in Leicester and Loughborough.
Today, I had my blood sugar level tested and was relieved to discover I'm not currently at high risk.
Several years ago I was at high risk because of my family history and weight - it was a wake up call for me.

A study here at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, external concluded that standing up for five minutes every half an hour can significantly reduce your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes - that's not even jumping up and exercising but simply standing up.
I never realised the small changes can make such a big difference.

Today is World Diabetes Day, external - and our city has one of the highest rates of the illness in the country.
There are 20,000 people diagnosed with diabetes in Leicester every year, according to the charity Diabetes UK.

If you aren't planning to visit India any time soon, Vinod Popat has this advice...
He says: "Recently the Deputy High Commissioner in London said people will be able to exchange their Indian currency here in local Indian banks. However they're waiting for RBI permission to come through - that should come through after the dust has settled in India."

Vinod Popat runs an advisory centre in Leicester - he described it as being like the Citizens Advice Bureau but for people whose first language isn't English.
He said lots of people have been to see him for advice on what to do with their 500 and 1,000 rupee notes.
The most simple advice he has is to take the notes back to India before 30 December and change them.
If you want to exchange them after that date, he said you'll need to take them to the Reserve Bank of India , externalor open an Indian "NRO" account.
It's Children in Need this Friday and there will be lots of people fundraising all week.

Another couple in Leicester said they have a large amount of 500 and 1,000 Indian rupee notes left over from holidays in the country.
They say they have been to the Bank of India in the UK to try and change the notes but "they refused to accept them".
This seems to be quite a common experience because technically, the notes should not leave the country.

One man has told BBC Radio Leicester he has 36 of the 500 rupee notes and three 1,000 rupee notes - that's about £260.
He said the money is now worthless.

Some people have been getting in touch with BBC Radio Leicester claiming they're going to be left out of pocket after the Indian government's decision to scrap some denominations of the Indian rupee.
A decision was made by the Indian Prime Minister last week to stop accepting all 500 and 1,000 rupee notes to crack down on corruption.

Leicestershire police will highlight the dangers of driving on the phone, external at an event in Blaby on Thursday.
Jonathan Clarkson from Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Road Safety Partnership, said, “Last year we saw a rise in the number of deaths or serious injuries on our roads and we are very aware of the devastating impact these accidents can have on families. Using a mobile phone behind the wheel all too often contributes to these tragic accidents."
