A woman who tried to kill her lover by pouring sulphuric acid over him while he slept will serve at least 17 years in prison.
Katie Leong had formed a relationship with 31-year-old Daniel Rotariu who lived in the same shared house in Turner Road, Leicester.
After a row in July last year, 52-year-old Leong poured the acid over him causing burns to 32% of his body and the loss of sight in both eyes.
He spent 26 weeks in hospital undergoing life-saving treatment and will continue to need medical help for many years, police said.
A jury at Leicester Crown Court convicted her of attempted murder and she was sentenced to a 34 year life sentence, to serve a minimum of 17 years.
A man accused of the same offence was found not guilty.
Quote MessageThe attack on Daniel was utterly wicked and it is quite astonishing that he survived. Leong has not shown any remorse – let alone humanity – for what she did to Daniel. Daniel, however, is a quite remarkable man. The strength and resilience he has shown, both in his fight for life in hospital, and in his ability to give evidence in this trial, is truly humbling."

A large amount of jewellery has been stolen from a house in Hathern.
Nearly 50 items worth thousands of pounds were taken from the property sometime between 18:15 on 1 March and 10:00 the following morning.
Among the pieces stolen is this distinct gold-plated medal and gold necklace...
Another item stolen was an Emporio Armani watch engraved "To Dad love Karen and Dave".
A camera and a car were also stolen from the property.
Quote Message“As well as the medal and the watch that are distinct and would be easy to identify, much of the jewellery has sentimental value having been inherited from family and purchased while on holiday in the Far East.”

The fire service said they started getting calls about this emergency just before 11:00 this morning.
They said it started after an explosion in the electricity substation but is now being contained by firefighters.
The substation has a transformer inside which has nearly 9,000 gallons of oil in it so that is why it is being allowed to burn off.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue has said it has sent four firefighters with breathing apparatus in to tackle the blaze.
The service added that it was consulting with Western Power throughout the operation to put the fire out.

I've just had a chat with Andrew Tyrrell who works for the Ordnance Survey and sent us some aerial shots of the fire on Ravensbridge Drive.
He's part of the Flying Unit which came across the fire on their way back to East Midlands Airport, where they're based. They'd been in Dover carrying out a survey.
He told me they were in a light aircraft and despite the size of the fire they couldn't feel any heat from it. The pilot did however have to make sure he flew upwind so the smoke didn't impact on vision.
