    A recruitment drive took place in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, to encourage people from under represented communities to join the police.

    Officers from the Shirebrook Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and one of the force’s recruitment specialists met with residents in the town to speak about career options with Derbyshire Constabulary.

    It is part of a rolling programme of events across the county as part of the force’s positive action initiative, which aims to ensure it represents the community it serves.

    Investigations continue into what polluted a stream at Netherfield Lagoons, wiping out all the wildlife.

    The Environment Agency sent a specialist team to clean up the area and is trying to establish the cause.

    But conservationists say they are frustrated as the issue was first reported three weeks ago.

    Mark Glover, from the Gedling Conservation Trust, said: "Everything has blackened and the vegetation alongisde it is dead, as is all life in the stream.

    "But it is the smell which really gets to you, in fact it is so bad, it would make you gag if you were close-by to it."

    A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 66-year-old man in Mansfield Woodhouse.

    The police and ambulance were called just after 21:00 last night to a house on Long Meadow - they found the man with serious injuries.

    He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

    Police have arrested a 21-year-old woman who is now being interviewed by officers.

    High winds have forced the closure of Chatsworth Flower Show's press day.

    Two 20ft (6m) trees have been blown over, which has caused all the marquees to close.

    Exhibitors have been asked to take down anything which could blow away.

    The show, the first to be held, is due to open tomorrow to the public.

    A book of condolence has been opened at Leicestershire County Hall for people to leave a message for the victims of Saturday night's terror attack in London.

    Dozens of people defied the rain to pay tribute to the victims of terrorism outside Nottingham Council House.

    Michael Edwards, the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, gave a speech to the crowd before a minute's silence was held.

    Rosey Palmer, who grew up in London but now lives in Nottingham, said her desire to stand together with the victims was strengthened after being unable to attend the vigil for those affected by the recent attack in Manchester.

  12. Repair work contributed to bridge collapse, report concludespublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    Workers repairing a railway bridge contributed to its partial collapse, a report has concluded.

    The Rail Accident Investigation Branch concluded in its report that the collapse at Barrow upon Soar, which caused chaos last year, was contributed to by workers drilling through a water main.

    They had been "coring" the surface of the bridge to investigate a subsidence in the footpath.

    It's thought this, along with a vertical crack along the wall, disturbed a pressurised water main causing it to rupture, leading to the collapse.

    The report also concluded, external that the Victorian design of the bridge, a long-standing crack in the wall and a slow leak in the water main contributed to the incident.

    The RAIB has made two recommendations to Network Rail in their report including making more information available to its staff.

  13. Student creates adrenaline pen for allergy suffererspublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 6 June 2017

    A student from Nottingham Trent University, who suffers from a nut allergy, has designed a compact adrenaline pen to encourage people to carry the device.

    William Charteris, studying a degree in product design, was inspired to create the device after becoming frustrated with carrying around his EpiPen.

    He said: “I’ve had an EpiPen for around 15 years and I have always hated carrying around this large, ugly device since I was a child. People would ask what it was and point out that it looks scary and intimidating."

    William's work will be displayed at the university's 2017 Degree Show, external from 3 to 10 June.

    A teenager from Leicester has spoken to the BBC about why he carried a knife on the city streets.

    So far this year, at least eight people in the county have been stabbed to death.

    Ryan, who is 19 years old, said: "Belgrave had a gang, Northfields had a gang - so there was a lot of conflict around the area that I lived.

    "I got a knife put up to my throat at one point... after that I... got my mate to buy me an army flick knife.

    "Some guy tried to attack me while I was playing football... I just flicked it out one time and was like 'come on then I'll stab you up'. He got proper scared and just left. I thought 'this is handy having this in my pocket'."

    He wasn't deterred by a brush with the law - and a fine of £15 - but then he lost of friend to knife crime and became a father.

    A national cycling group has been talking to the BBC about the dangers of "car-dooring".

    It's after the death of 26-year-old Sam Boulton who was knocked off his bike by the opening of a taxi door parked outside Leicester Railway Station.

    Yesterday the driver Farook Bhikhu was fined £300 for permitting the opening of a vehicle door so as to injure or endanger a person.

    Duncan Dollimore from Cycling UK said: "The issue of where people park is a factor in many of the deaths that we've had in relation to 'car-dooring'."

    The group is lobbying government to make training on "car-dooring" a part of learning to drive.
