A row has broken out between Derbyshire County Council's deputy leader Simon Spencer and police and crime commissioner, Hardyal Dhindsa, about who is responsible for speeding concerns.
Mr Spencer has accused Mr Dhindsa of providing reassurances to councils and residents about speed reduction, despite it being the council's responsibility.
"The police and crime commissioner will not have that detail. It's his job to focus on speed management and that's where he should focus his attention in my opinion," he said.
In response, Mr Dhindsa said speed limits are often brought up when he speaks to residents and he always directs them to the county council.
He added: "However if I think speed limits can help reduce accidents I would be happy to support their applications to the county council."
