    A row has broken out between Derbyshire County Council's deputy leader Simon Spencer and police and crime commissioner, Hardyal Dhindsa, about who is responsible for speeding concerns.

    Mr Spencer has accused Mr Dhindsa of providing reassurances to councils and residents about speed reduction, despite it being the council's responsibility.

    "The police and crime commissioner will not have that detail. It's his job to focus on speed management and that's where he should focus his attention in my opinion," he said.

    In response, Mr Dhindsa said speed limits are often brought up when he speaks to residents and he always directs them to the county council.

    He added: "However if I think speed limits can help reduce accidents I would be happy to support their applications to the county council."

    Loughborough Lightening netball star Beth Cobden has been talking about the feeling of winning a gold with England at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

    "It was surreal," she told BBC East Midlands Today. "The whole game seemed like a blur and when we finally won, at the very last second, it was just brilliant."

    Ms Cobden said the team's big win against favourites Australia had grabbed people's attention and had seen interest in netball rise.

    She added: "Already we've seen numbers increase in participation, so it's been brilliant, and we really appreciate the support we're getting and we hope it continues."

    Police are trying to find two people who are thought to have broken into a woman's home in Alfreton and stolen a wheelchair commode.

    The pair entered through the garden of the house on Southcroft Avenue about 23:50 on Friday 23 March and abandoned the commode down the road.

    The force has released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the theft.

    PC Sean Davies said: “This is not the first time that this lady has been targeted so we are keen to catch those responsible. We believe there may have been two people involved."

    A taxi driver who claimed to be asthmatic and allergic to dogs has been fined £1,000 for not taking a passenger with a guide dog.

    Mohammad Jauffer, who works for Everest Taxis in Leicester, was booked to take Haseeb Ahmad and his guide dog Walt from the BrewDog pub to the Flamingo Bar in September last year.

    Yesterday, Leicester Magistrates Court heard how 36-year-old Jauffer, of Stockton Road, Leicester, failed to show the necessary medical exemption certificate when asked by the Mr Ahmad to show proof of his illness.

    Jauffer pleaded guilty to the offence and was also told to pay an added £100 in compensation to Mr Ahmad.

    A city council committee will now assess whether Jauffer is entitled to keep his taxi and licence.

    Refusing to take a guide dog is an offence under the Equality Act 2010.

    If you're travelling on the M1 in about two weeks' time, it will be closed between junctions 23a and 24 to allow the new Kegworth Bypass Bridge to be installed.

    The southbound carriageway will close at 22:00 on Friday 11 May and the northbound side will shut two hours later. Both will reopen shortly after 15:00 on Sunday.

    Vandals have caused thousands of pounds of damage and delayed a £60,000 project after wrecking machinery in a Blaby park.

    Resurfacing work at Oakfield Park was on course to be finished on Friday but the equipment is out of action after the attack.

    Workers from Gridforce, the contractors carrying out the work, discovered the damage when they arrived on site this morning.

    Stuart Dove, a director for the firm, said: "It isn't just smashed windows. Stones have been put in the engine and fuel lines have been pulled. Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing."

    Leicestershire Police said it is investigating.

    A man has avoided jail for an illegal cigarettes and alcohol scam, worth £33,000 in unpaid tax.

    Sanmukh Prajapati was caught with more than 50,000 cigarettes, 63kg of hand rolling tobacco and hundreds of bottles of whiskey and vodka not for UK sale.

    The 41-year-old said the cigarettes, which had been discovered in bin bags at his Leicester home, had been left by a friend and the alcohol had been bought from Tesco.

    He had previously been warned for selling alcohol at his shop on Belgrave Road that was not meant for UK sale.

    Richard Young, from HMRC, said: "This is theft from the taxpayer, denying public services much-needed money, as well as undermining legitimate traders."

    Prajapati was given a ten-month jail term, suspended for two years, and told to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work.

    He was also told the alcohol and cigarettes would be seized and destroyed.

    There has been a rise in the amount of crimes being recorded by police forces across the region, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

    Nottinghamshire Police noted down 93,800 crimes in 2017, an increase of 24% on the year before.

    Leicestershire Police recorded 79,250, a rise of 21% on 2016.

    Police in Derbyshire saw the smallest rise in the region of 5%, having detailed 55,641 crimes in 2017.

    The figures do not include fraud offences.
