    Derby City Council's likely to have to fund the shortfall in its A52 roadworks project itself.

    The work at the Wyvern is expected to cost twice as much as first predicted.

    The council said other organisations who helped fund the original £15m are unlikely to make any more money available.

    The council is to take £7.7m from its own reserves to keep the project going in the short term.

    Drivers have been warned roads in the Castle Donington area are likely to be very busy over the next few days because of the Download Festival at Donington Park, external.

    About 60,000 rock fans will be heading to the site for the event and motorists have been urged to allow extra time for journeys - especially when heading to catch flights from East Midlands Airport.

    Festival organisers have been running a campaign encouraging people to travel to Download by bus, coach or train but Leicestershire Police say delays remain likely from Wednesday to Monday.

    Sarah Redfearn, from Highways England, said: “Major roads and motorways in the area, including the M1, A42, A50 and A453, are likely to be busy.

    “All routes to the festival will be well signposted, but people travelling in the area should plan their journey in advance."

    People across Leicestershire have overwhelmingly called for school term and holiday dates to remain the same in the county.

    More than 6,000 people responded to a Leicestershire County Council consultation which asked parents, carers, teachers and members of the public for their views on three suggested options for autumn 2019 onwards, one of which aligned with the dates for Leicester city schools.

    However, cabinet members will be told next week that 71% of the people who had their say were in favour of remaining with Leicestershire's traditional pattern of early autumn and spring breaks at half-term, with the summer holiday break including the last two weeks of July.

    A term-time pattern based on Leicester City Council's arrangements from autumn 2019 received 22% support, with 6% favouring an alternative pattern with a later autumn and spring half-term and 1% of respondents not expressing a preference.

    Councillors will discuss the consultation and feedback at a cabinet meeting next week.

    A 32-year-old has been found guilty of raping a woman in Derby as she walked home from a night out, external.

    Police said Ion Nastase, of Derby Road, Derby, subjected a 41-year-old woman to a "brutal and callous" attack in Harriet Street, Rose Hill, in October 2016.

    He was found guilty at Derby Crown Court of two counts of rape and admitted one count of burglary.

    He's due to be sentenced at the same court next week.

    A man who was arrested yesterday after a suspicious item was found in a car remains in police custody today.

    Houses were evacuated and roads were closed around the car in Huntingdon Road in Leicester after the item was found at about 08:30.

    The bomb squad examined the item and took it away for further testing.

    The 26-year-old who was arrested remains in police custody.

    The incident is not being treated as terror-related.

    The fire service says yesterday's blaze at a building in Friar Gate in Derby was probably started accidentally by workmen carrying out hot work on the roof.

    The fire, at Norman House, sent a thick black plume of smoke into the air and brought traffic to a standstill as fire crews worked to put it out.

    A fire service spokesman said the building had been turned back over to the site management team following the conclusion of its investigation into the cause.

    He added a firefighter who picked up minor injuries while tackling the blaze is "completely fine" now.

    A man who died in a crash on the A38 in Cornwall during the recent bank holiday weekend has been named as 72-year-old Michael Ryan from Nottingham.

    The Land Rover driver died when his vehicle and a Volvo flatbed lorry collided on the A38 at Newbridge Cross, in the Glynn Valley near Bodmin, at about 11:15 on Monday 28 May

    He was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin were informed and formal identification took place.

    A female passenger in the Land Rover was airlifted to hospital in Plymouth with non-life-threatening injuries.

    Inquiries were continuing into the cause of the crash, police said, external.

    A pair of kestrels that have been nesting at the University of Loughborough for five years have hatched four chicks.

    The eggs hatched on 25 May, according to the university.

    Senior arborist Mark Hillman said: "The chicks are starting to get their first feathers, that’s why they are preening so much.

    "We will start to see the new feathers showing through the fluff in the next day or so."

    He said they'll be ready to leave the nest in a couple of weeks.

    Plans for a major extension for a row of shops in the heart of Derby have been approved by the city council.

    Developers want to build 48 flats above existing buildings at the junction of St Peter's Street and East Street.

    The council said: "The proposed apartment scheme involving extensions and alterations above and to the facades of the Audley Centre would form a high quality residential development in the city centre, delivering much needed new housing and regeneration benefits."

    The authority said the new apartments would be "car free", with no parking or vehicle access included in the plans.

    A bench dedicated to the memory of a pub-goer who recently died has been stolen the day after it was unveiled.

    Regulars at the Seven Stars, in Church Street, Riddings, had purchased the bench and placed it outside the pub on Sunday 27 May.

    At about 07.50 the next day, the bench was taken.

    Derbyshire Police have released a picture of a group of men seen near the venue at the time who they would like to speak to.
