An animal rights activist who stole a pig from a farm in Leicestershire has been sentenced.

    Wesley Omar

Wesley Omar (pictured centre) filmed himself at Belmont Farm in Pickwell, near Melton Mowbray in July last year and posted the footage on YouTube.

At Leicester Crown Court today, the 23-year-old, from Edith Weston, Rutland, admitted theft saying he did it to raise awareness of the conditions animals are kept in.

The pig he stole - which has been named Wilbur - was valued at about £50 and is now living on an animal sanctuary.

It couldn’t be returned because of contamination fears but the court heard how the farmer since invested £5,000-£6,000 on new security measures, including CCTV and fences.

Judge Nicholas Dean QC described Omar as an "intelligent young man" and said the conviction itself would serve as a punishment because it would affect future employment.

But he also gave him a 12-month community order, with 100 hours of unpaid work.

"You are not entitled to commit criminal acts in the form of protest," the judge told him.

One of the largest examples of a Roman mosaic floor discovered in Leicester is going on display for the first time today.

The find is now on display at BBC Radio Leicester until 27 July.

Matthew Morris from the University of Leicester who worked on the excavation, said: "Most town houses would have had a tessellated pavement but they would have been quite simple.

"To have one of this sophistication you've had to spend a lot of money having it designed, having a master craftsman working on it, probably with a team. There's hundreds of thousands of little squares in this mosaic in its original form."

The site was opened to the public last year, with archaeology fans queuing round the corner to catch a glimpse of the floor.
