  12. Meeting held to fight against nursery closurepublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 17 July 2018

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

Parents and residents filled a room last night to discuss plans to close Basford Hall nursery at Nottingham College.

Bosses at the college decided the nursery will close at the end of this month because it is no longer "financially viable".

They said it costs £100,000 a year to run, that occupancy rates are too low and the money could be spent on educating students instead.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said councillors and the local MP have called for the decision to be reversed and have argued the nursery makes a profit for the college.

In a joint statement last week, city council leader Jon Collins and Nottingham North MP Alex Norris, said: "We are disappointed at their [Nottingham College's] unwillingness to reconsider their decision."

"We also share a wider concern in the direction currently being taken by the college, as it appears to be moving away from the principle of offering support to all learners of all abilities but instead towards a narrower model of education which will be unable to fully address the needs of learners in the city."

The baby's grandparents had stopped to take a picture when the brake failed and the chair rolled into the water - with the baby still strapped inside.

The grandfather jumped into the water but was struggling to lift the chair when passing cyclist - former BBC East Midlands political editor John Hess - raced to help rescue the child.

"There's a moment where this child is on the bank and nothing happens and I'm just thinking, 'please cry'," said an emotional Andy.

"And then it does and that's the best sound in the world to hear a child that you thought may well have died - it was under the water for 20-25 seconds - actually cry and you know it's ok."

Andy said he spoke to the couple afterwards: "Can you imagine what they're feeling, what's going through their mind? Awful."

Well now a sundial has also appeared at the front of the house, which had been unknown to staff before.

Ben Mason from the National Trust said even some of the longest-serving staff who have been there since the 1970s "can't remember seeing this much detail."

Mr Mason said rooms and corridors have become visible as stone foundations left in the ground heated up more quickly than surrounding material, scorching the soil above to a lighter shade.
