  12. Why is my taxi from another city?published at 10:59 British Summer Time 18 July 2018

    Dave Wade
    BBC News

If you've ever wondered why your taxi is registered in a different part of the country, it's down to a piece of legislation passed three years ago.

The Deregulation Act 2015 meant a private-hire driver does not have to live or operate in the local authority area that grants his or her licence.

    Scott Baldwin

Since then, Oadby and Wigston in Leicestershire has seen one of the biggest rises in licensed taxi and private hire drivers in England and Wales.

In Wolverhampton, which has registered the highest number by far, there was a slow-drive through the city on Monday in protest.

It's because some cabbies say the changes to assessments for new drivers have led to safety being put at risk.

Some say it is too easy to pass the test in Wolverhampton. The council strongly disputes this.

Scott Baldwin (pictured above), a taxi driver from Derby who attended the protest, said "There's Wolverhampton-licensed drivers operating as far away as Southampton.

"This is not going to stop unless it's reined in. It'll carry on until the government intervenes."
