    Thieves have stolen thousands of pounds worth of lead, external from the roof of a children's centre in Mansfield.

    The theft took place at the Grade II-listed Westfield Folkhouse Young People's Centre at about 04:00 on 22 August.

    Nottinghamshire County Council said the theft had been caught on CCTV and investigations were ongoing.

    Philip Owen, chairman of the county council’s children and young people’s committee, said: “These mindless thieves have caused extensive damage to this historic building’s roof and the repairs will be costly as we will need to use specialist contractors due to its listed status."

    Plans have been unveiled, external for a new council-run crematorium off the A47 outside Hinckley.

    Final designs for the £4.6m facility were drawn up by the borough council following a public consultation.

    If approved, construction work would begin in spring with the crematorium opening in 2020.

    It was spotted near Osborn's Pond in Shipley Country Park earlier.

    Derbyshire Police said they couldn't provide any details about what happened, although there appears to be police tape at the scene.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, following three reports of overnight attacks in Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire.

    A bin in Bell Lane was set alight just after 23:00, then two vehicles and a number of wheelie bins were found to have been burned in Mowsley Road between last night and early this morning.

    The blaze also affected a nearby property but no-one was injured.

    A short time later, a van was set alight in Church Street.

    Det Con Chantel Booth said she believed the attacks were linked.

    “I’m particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in either Bell Lane, Mowsley Road or Church Street last night or in the early hours of this morning and who saw or heard anyone acting in a suspicious manner."

    The man arrested, a 35-year-old from Gloucestershire, remains in custody.

    The burglary took place in West End, Pinxton, between 12:00 and 15:00.

    Three boys and a girl have been questioned by police after two hedgehogs were burnt to death at a park in Derbyshire.

    The animals were killed within the rose garden area of Manor Park in Glossop between 21 and 22 August.

    Derbyshire Police said the children, aged between 14 and 16, had been voluntarily interviewed under caution and a decision is yet to be made on whether they will be charged with any offences.

    The force added it was not looking for anyone else in connection with the killings.

    A man has been banned from driving for 24 months after being caught doing more than 140mph in his BMW on the M69.

    Jasbir Hayre, 40, pleaded guilty to four driving offences, including driving while over the alcohol limit and speeding.

    Mr Hayre, of Grangemouth Road, Coventry, was pulled over on 8 August.

    The traffic officer in pursuit of him had to drive at 157mph in order to catch up.

    Sentencing, magistrate Helen Darling said: “I’ve been a magistrate for 15 years and it’s the highest speed I’ve ever seen, so there is no option but to enforce a 24-month ban.”

    Defending, Yakesh Tanna said: “He is riddled with embarrassment. He wishes to apologise to the court.

    “He admits it was foolish and reckless but very fortunately, nobody was injured.”

    Hayre also pleaded guilty to having two unfit tyres on his car.

    A 28-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the death of a newborn baby.

    The body of a premature baby, born at 32 weeks, was found in the Hinckley area on Sunday, April 30 last year.

    Hannah Cobley, from Broughton Road in Stoney Stanton, is due to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

    Two staff members at a business in Leicester were assaulted and threatened with a gun during a robbery this morning, external.

    Leicestershire Police said a man entered a building in Barkby Road at about 07:20 armed with what is believed to have been a handgun and attacked staff.

    The pair were not seriously injured and the robber left without any money.

    The name of the business has not been revealed at the request of the owner.

    Det Sgt Scott Cairns said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the two members of staff involved and although, thankfully, they didn’t receive any injuries, they were very shaken by what happened.

    "We know that the suspect walked to the premises from the direction of Oliver Road and then left, going back that way. I would ask anyone who saw a man matching this description to contact police."

    A Derby factory where a schoolboy fell to his death last year could be turned into affordable housing.

    The former Aida Bliss factory is in the flood zone near the River Derwent and Derby City Council has long wanted to buy it as part of its Our City Our River flood prevention project.
