    Firefighters have given a cat oxygen to help it to breathe after being rescued from a house fire in Leicester.

    Crews were called to the house on Melland Place just after 09:00, following reports of a fire in the kitchen.

    All the people inside managed to escape but the cat and a dog had to be saved. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said the cat was later taken to the vets by its owner.

    We've had a few comments on a foul smell hanging over Derby this morning.

    Christine Stangroom said on Facebook, external: "It smells like muck spreading in Oakwood this morning. Probably just wind blowing from farmers' fields towards the city."

    Jamez Milner tweeted, external: Probably that Incinerator on Sinfin lane. I can no longer cycle to work as riding past that place makes me vomit from inhaling the fumes.

    The city council said it is aware of the smell but doesn't know what it is.

    The police and fire service, and the Environment Agency, have all said they have not received any calls about the smell.

    Leicester City's plans to build a new £100m training ground on Park Hill Lane, near Seagrave, are being opposed by dozens of residents and at least three parish councils.

    Charnwood Borough Council is currently considering the application, external to build the new complex on a golf course about 10 miles from Melton Mowbray.

    People living in nearby villages have voiced concerns the new facility would spoil the tranquility of the area, with some concerned it could create a flood risk.

    Seagrave, Thrussington and Ratcliffe on the Wreake parish councils have formally objected to the plans on the grounds the extra traffic could make the A46 more dangerous.

    However, Sileby and Cossington parish councils have said they have no objection to the facility.

    Charnwood Borough Council is due to make a decision later this year.

    Care home inspectors contacted the police following a visit to an "inadequate" residential home in Barrow upon Soar.

    The Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited Pinglenook Residential Home on three days in June. The inspection was brought forward, external after a whistle blower made allegations of abuse, unsafe care, and poor facilities.

    On the first two days of the inspection, on 11 and 12 June, the service was described as "chaotic" with no manager in place.

    Thirteen people were living at the home at the time - one had lost over 3kg in weight and should have been referred to the GP.

    The inspector also saw stained pillow cases and quilt covers and found dried blood on one of the pillow cases.

    When inspectors returned to the home, on 28 June, a manager had been appointed.

    The report states she rapidly managed to improve the home's care, effectiveness and responsiveness towards residents. However, the services still "required improvement".

    The home has been rated "inadequate" overall and placed in special measures. The CQC has said it will be kept under review and inspected again within six months.

    Leicestershire Police confirmed they’re investigating an incident, alongside the CQC, where it appears a resident was injured.

    The BBC has been criticised for giving the lead role to an able-bodied actor in a new drama about the "Elephant Man".

    Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton has been chosen to play Joseph Merrick, who came from Leicester and had huge physical deformities.

    Phil Talbot from Scope described the decision as a "a missed opportunity" and claimed "a massive pool of disabled talent had been overlooked".

    He said: "Sadly, a lack of diversity in the industry is nothing new. Disabled actors still often face huge barriers to break into the business. Not only are the roles few and far between, but castings and locations are often not accessible."

    A BBC spokesperson said: "The Elephant Man is an iconic drama that has had an important role to play in highlighting changing attitudes to disability and we are currently in the process of casting disabled actors in a variety of key roles."

    People have reported smelling a foul stench across Derby city centre this morning.

    The odour has been described as being like manure or sick.

    The police and fire services told BBC Radio Derby they have not had any reports of chemical spills or leaks.

    Derby City Council says it is aware of the smell but does not yet know what is causing it.

    People in Nottinghamshire can now join in with the growing trend of goat yoga.

    The unusual craze - pictured in action in the US - involves participants being led through a variety of yoga poses with the sometimes-less-than-helpful assistance of cheeky goat kids.

    Instructor Polly Wiltshire said: "We weren't sure how it would go but people seem to be loving it and the goats seem to be loving it too.

    "I've just opened the door into the goat yoga enclosure and all the goats have come running straight out. That tells me they want to engage with it."

    Anyone who witnessed a fatal crash on the A42 last week is being asked to contact Leicestershire Police.

    It happened at about 12:20 on 24 August on the southbound carriageway close to Ashby de la Zouch.

    The crash involved a black VW Transporter van and white Renault HGV. The driver of the van, 56-year-old John William Trigger from Breaston, died. The driver of HGV was uninjured.

    A new system which will notify passengers about disruption to their journeys using Facebook messages is being trialled in Leicestershire and Rutland.

    A trial to improve access to GPs in Long Eaton and Ilkeston is being extended following a reduction in hospital admissions in the area.

    The On Day service has been running since last year and provides alternative doctors or senior nurses for those who call their GP for a same-day appointment.

    The scheme will now expand across Erewash after A&E attendances and hospital admissions dropped.

    Four children have been placed into foster care in Leicester because of the level of "antipathy and conflict" between their separated parents.

    The decision to put the children into care was made two years ago. The father made an appeal at a private family court hearing in Worcester last month but the High Court judge refused to reverse his decision.

    The judge said the man had "deeply-held" views about the children's mother and had at one stage hired a private detective to "undertake surveillance" of her.

    Mr Justice Keehan said placing such relatively young children into long-term foster care was "extremely unusual" but he had no doubt they would suffer "greater emotional harm" if they lived with either their mother or father.

    Police investigating a liquid being thrown in the face of a man in Leicester are re-appealing for help from the public.

    The attack happened on Jarrom Street on 19 May when a 20-year-old man had liquid thrown in his face causing "significant injuries". He still hasn't regained sight in one of his eyes.

    The liquid is not believed to be acid but further tests are being carried out.

  17. Most popular phone box 'meeting-point for drug users'published at 08:46 British Summer Time 30 August 2018

    It's claimed Nottinghamshire's most-used phone box is the home of daily drug use.

    Last year more than 3,000 calls were made from a booth near the Bridgeway Centre in the Meadows.

    BT suggested it might be so popular because of people nearby not having mobiles and even suggested it was being used by tourists but according to a business just yards away the box is a "known meeting-point" for drug users.

    Chris Brummit works at the Bridges Community Trust and told the BBC: "We regularly see people hanging around there and get the smell of various things."

    She said they have spoken to Nottinghamshire Police about the problem. A statement from the force confirmed they were aware of incidents in the vicinity of a phone box.

    It said steps are being taken to tackle them, including high-visibility patrols in the area.

    Children were left stranded at the roadside on the first day of school because a bus company had not realised the new term had started.

    The primary school in Old Dalby, like others in Leicestershire, started back on Tuesday but the bus firm serving it got the term dates mixed up.

    Head teacher Rosie Browne said term dates were published a year in advance.
