    Plans to turn the former Derby College in Heanor into houses and apartments have been sent packing after a 15-minute council meeting.

    The proposal, pitched to Amber Valley Borough Council by Vale Property Limited, was to turn the Grade II-listed building into 24 apartments, the former science block into a further nine apartments, and to build 19 houses in the college grounds.

    Last night borough councillors voted to unanimously reject the plans.

    They felt the proposal would cause "substantial harm to the setting of the listed building" and said insufficient information had been submitted to "fully assess the impacts of the development to allow full and proper consideration of the proposal".

  2. Hales and Stokes charged by ECB over nightclub troublepublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Nottinghamshire's Alex Hales and Durham's Ben Stokes have been charged with bringing the game into disrepute by the England and Wales Cricket Board following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub.

    The independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) hearing will be held on 5 and 7 December.

    All-rounder Stokes, 27, denied a charge of affray resulting from the September 2017 incident and was found not guilty in August.

    Batsman Hales, 29, was not charged.

    A modern slavery trial has heard a worker told a Derby policewoman he would be killed if he didn't hand over his wages.

    A total of 11 members of an extended family have denied recruiting vulnerable Latvians and forcing them to work at factories in the Derby area.

    Nottingham Crown Court was told dozens of victims were fleeced by the family and one woman spent two years as a domestic slave.

    A woman discovered blow darts lodged in her cat PJ, five years after a similar attack on her other pet.

    The mother-of-two, who does not want to be named, from Bramcote in Nottingham, let her two-year-old cat PJ out in the garden on the morning of 8 September as usual.

    An hour later PJ, pictured, returned with three small wooden stakes stuck in him, which she believes are blow darts.

    She managed to pull them out but was particularly concerned after she found similar homemade darts, pictured below, in her cat Fudge five years ago.

    She said: “It just seems like it is a calculated attack and why anyone would want to do anything like this baffles me.

    "But they have caused pain to both my cats and I just don’t want it happening to any other animals so want to warn others living nearby.”

    A marine biology student wore a home-made graduation gown made out of crisp packets to highlight plastic pollution.

    Emily Stevenson created the protest outfit to "send a message to Walkers" that it should do more to reduce its non-recyclable packaging.

    The 21-year-old wore the creation to her graduation ceremony at Plymouth University yesterday after spotting "ancient crisp packets" littering the beach.

    She said: "I was a bit worried people wouldn't get why I was doing it, but everyone loved it."

    Leicester-based Walkers has said the packaging for all of its products would be recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025.

    A man has been charged after a bag containing a large amount of money was stolen from an 80-year-old man at a library.

    Police were called to the library in Memorial Avenue, Worksop, last Wednesday over reports that a bag was stolen after a man left it on a table to return a book.

    A 35-year-old man, from Chesterfield, has been charged with theft and is due to appear at Mansfield Magistrates' Court later today.

    Police have arrested and charged a man they had been searching for following an alleged armed robbery in Chaddesden, external.

    A 44-year-old, from Chaddesden, was arrested yesterday after a member of the public spotted the police appeal and contacted the force.

    He has been charged with robbery, possession of a firearm, possession of an imitation firearm and possession of a bladed article following the incident in Wiltshire Road on 2 September.

    Footballer Stephen Darby has been forced to retire after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

    The 29-year-old defender joined Notts County on loan from Liverpool in the 2010-11 season, making 24 appearances for the club.

    The Bolton Wanderers full-back last played in December.

    "I would like to ask for privacy at this time so I can adjust to the battle I have ahead and that I can spend time with those closest to me," he said.

    The Chesterfield and District Ex Services Association asked folk to knit, crochet or felt poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

    They hoped for 15,000 - they got 43,500.

    British WBO middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders has been charged with misconduct by the British Boxing Board for offering a woman drugs.

    Saunders has apologised for the incident, in which he was filmed offering a woman £150 worth of drugs to perform a sex act and is then asked to punch a passer by, which she does, before Saunders drives off.

    A Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers will be looking to identify and speak to all of those who feature in this sickening video.

    "A full investigation will be carried out into the number of offences that have been captured on film, including the offer to supply Class A drugs, aiding and abetting an assault, assault and public order offences."

    Saunders has since apologised on Twitter.
