    A road which was blocked by a fallen tree this morning has since reopened.

    The tree fell on 53-year-old Darrell Starr's Range Rover in Nottingham Road, Trowell, forcing him to clamber free out of the back passenger door.

    Tony Palladino has signed a two-year contract extension, external at Derbyshire.

    The 35-year-old fast bowler is the club's leading wicket-taker in the County Championship this season.

    However, first team coach Steve Stubbings has announced he's leaving the club at the end of the current season to return to Australia.

    The former Derbyshire bowler was appointed to the coaching team last year.

    The trial of a 20-year-old man accused of a total of 39 child grooming and sexual offences is due to begin at Leicester Crown Court on 15 October.

    Ryan Steadman, of Stud Road, Barleythorpe, Oakham, has been charged with offences including rape, child grooming and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

    Mr Steadman was due to appear at the court for a pre-trial hearing this morning but was unable to attend.

    He remains in custody ahead of his trial.

    Work is under way to clear up Matlock town centre after it was flooded early this morning.

    Derbyshire Dales District Council has said the town was hit by flash floods but the floodwater had gone by the morning rush hour.

    The authority is now cleaning up the post-flood debris and mud, along with giving sandbags to those considered most in need.

    Local businesses are being told help will be given "where possible" but due to the heavy workload they are being advised to make their own arrangements.

    A stretch of the A515 has been closed south of Ashbourne following a crash involving a motorbike and a trailer.

    Police said it happened near the Cockshead Lane junction at about 11:30. Paramedics and the fire service are also at the scene.

    No information has been given on injuries but police said the road was likely to stay closed "for some time".

    A man has been found guilty of drink driving and banned for 18 months after police say he hit a 73-year-old pedestrian in Bingham.

    John Nielson, 46, of Green Court, Bingham, was sentenced at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday following a one-day trial.

    He was also found guilty of driving without due car and attention.

    Neilson was given an 18-month disqualification from driving and was ordered to pay costs and compensation of £1,690.

    A man has described the moment a "huge" tree fell on his car in Trowell this morning.

    Darrell Starr, a lorry driver from Nottingham, had been making his way back home from work when it happened.

    He said he was driving along Nottingham Road when the road "just vanished" and he slammed on his brakes. He said: "The scary part is not being able to stop. There was nothing I could have done.”

    The tree fell on the 53-year-old's Range Rover forcing him to clamber free out of the back passenger door.

    The emergency services told him he was lucky to have walked free without a scratch. He said: "I didn’t feel very lucky at the time. But looking at the car now it looks that way.”

    It's been a busy night for Western Power Distribution as Storm Bronagh meant the company had more power cuts to deal with than usual.

    In Derbyshire more than 2,000 homes and businesses were left without power. In Nottinghamshire there were 422 and in the Leicestershire and Kettering area there were 150.

    All have now had power restored.

    There was a robust debate about the future of Ilkeston hospital during a public meeting in Kirk Hallam last night.

    Campaigners claim beds are being closed without consultation but NHS bosses have said a decision hasn't yet been made.

    The health service in Derbyshire needs to save £51m this year, and a larger amount next year.

    Chris Clayton, who's in charge of NHS commissioning in Derbyshire, said: "We have too many of a certain type of bed. We need to review that situation in the south of the county".

    Some of the people that attended told the BBC they didn't feel they'd got any answers. One person said answers given by the panel of NHS bosses were "vague" and contradicted what hospital staff were telling them.

    The meeting was organised by local Conservative MP, Maggie Throup. She denied the NHS was underfunded in Erewash and said the timing of the meeting was always going to be difficult.

    A police dog who was stabbed four times in July is back on the beat and already back to his best.

    A suspect of domestic violence and theft made off from officers but was tracked and detained by Axle yesterday evening. Derbyshire police said.

    PD Axle was injured while assisting police in High Street, Riddings, Derbyshire, on 4 July.

    Matthew Stretch, 28, of Plantation Road, Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, will be sentenced on 4 October in connection with the stabbing.

    He admitted three counts of making threats to kill, two counts of damaging property - police dog Axle and a police car - common assault, having a knife, and breaching a restraining order.
