  3. Campaigners call new road plan 'ill thought-out'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 9 October 2018

    Tony Roe
    BBC East Midlands political editor

Opponents of a new road, which would take traffic around the south and east of Leicester, say the idea is, "ill thought-out".

Campaigners from the village of Bleeby are pledging to resist the idea of an A46 'Expressway' because of concerns about its impact on the countryside.

Philip Bland, from the SE Leicestershire Action Group, said: "It is really a semi-motorway moving traffic from the south of Leicestershire to the north with the idea that you build houses alongside it.

"But it's going to scar large parts of the beautiful countryside."

    A46 fields

The idea of an A46 'Expressway' is a key part of plans by city, county and district councils to build 180,000 new homes over the next 30 years in Leicestershire.

The councils say it's important they come up with proposals because they have control over what's built and the transport infrastructure needed.

They say people will be consulted widely about the road before any decision is taken.

    Nick Smith
    BBC News Online

Retired engineer Ken Massingham, from Church Broughton, and his daughter Caroline, who is a graphic designer from Littleover, have spent the past year and £20,000 of their own money designing the ‘Love Lock Tree’.

Mr Massingham said he got the idea for the 5m (16ft) structure while listening to a BBC report about the damage locks were causing to Weir Bridge in Bakewell.

Mr Massingham said: "I came to the conclusion the ideal alternative would be to design a dedicated stand-alone structure that would inspire people to visit and leave their tributes."

The pair say they are in discussions to have the design installed in places across the UK.
