Firefighters say they experienced "verbal abuse" yesterday as they closed a road to tackle a van fire in Brinsley, Nottinghamshire.

Crews were called at about 09:35 to a fire in a parked van on Broad Lane, and said they decided to close the road to protect the officers, other vehicles and houses while they put it out.

A spokesperson from the Eastwood fire station said: "Unfortunately not everyone was happy that we’d closed the road off and one of our crew received some verbal abuse from a motorist because the motorist couldn’t get past."

On one of the visits, police say Gallop sexually assaulted the boy who jumped away and told him to stop.

Paramedics are to join mental health nurses and social workers as part of a "triage hub" at Derbyshire Police's call centre in Ripley so callers can be offered the most suitable help available.

The hub was created two years ago but it's hoped bringing in paramedics and a dedicated ambulance will help to further enhance its work.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said one of the key aims of the six-month pilot project was to cut down on unnecessary visits to A&E.

Tim Slater, from the service, said: "Currently, when a patient experiencing a mental health crisis calls 999, they may need to be taken to A&E for further assessment.

    Nick Smith
    BBC News Online

The Jain Centre in Leicester has lodged a petition against plans to partly pedestrianise a street as part of a £1.5m revamp.

York Road, which runs along side the temple, is where blue badge holders park and it is felt that pedestrianisation would limit their access.

Piyush Madhani, who is the current president of the centre said: "Right now with the plans the council have to pedestrianise York Road, there will be issues with the disabled and the elderly for them to visit the centre.

"We are at 1,550 signatures and we are trying to get as much support, as if plans go ahead to pedestrianise York Road then it will have a serious detrimental effect on existence in the centre.

"This is one of the oldest [Jain] centres in the western world, so its existence is quite important."

Jainism is an Indian religion which believes in equality of all living things and preaches non-violence.
