    Plans to improve access to one of Leicestershire's most popular beauty spots are being discussed by councils today.

    Proposals for a new footbridge and cycleway at Watermead County Park are being worked on by the city and county councils.

    The £1.5m bridge would be built across the River Soar on the Thurmaston side of the park.

    If approved, the bridge is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020.

    The organiser of Glossop's Christmas light switch-on said the community "wants to come together" to remember Emma Sillett and her five-year-old son Jenson Spellman.

    Thousands of people are expected to attend the event in the town's Norfolk Square tomorrow night.

    They will hold a two-minute silence ahead of the switch-on, followed by prayers led by the Reverend Rob Heeley of Holy Trinity Dinting Church.

    “There’s a lot of community spirit being shown and Glossop really wants to come together although it is a very sad time," said Jane Fletcher.

    “It’s an awful thing to happen but we all want to come together as a mark of respect."

    A soldier from Nottingham has received a bravery award for saving lives during the 2017 Las Vegas music festival mass shooting.

    Trooper Ross Woodward, of the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards, was presented the Gallantry Award for Life Saver in the Operational Honours and Awards List 50 for his actions.

    While on a rest day following a military exercise in the USA, he led other troopers towards the danger to help emergency services.

    His citation said: "There is no doubt that his assistance to the US first responders saved lives.

    "His actions were exceptional and he is fully deserving of nationwide recognition."

    Residents of a town plan to pay their respects to a mum and son whose bodies were recovered from a reservoir yesterday with a two-minute silence this weekend.

    Emma Sillett, 41, and Jenson Spellman were found dead after her car was spotted near Valehouse reservoir, Tintwistle.

    Residents of Glossop say their silence and prayers will take place directly before the planned Christmas lights switch-on at 19:00 on Saturday.

    Flowers and tributes to the pair can be left inside the barriers of the Christmas tree and a collection for the family is being conducted.

    A Nottingham man says around 100 "worms" have come out of his water taps during the past three months.

    Matthew Rhone said: "Since I moved in I’ve been ill with skin irritations and told the council that the water was irritating my skin and that was before I even found the worms."

    Severn Trent Water has confirmed that a water sample contains drain fly larvae, which must be in the water tank.

    Nottingham City Homes said it will replace the tank and flush through the whole system.

    Post-mortem tests on the bodies of a woman and her five-year-old-son who were recovered from a reservoir yesterday are due to be carried out later today, police say.

    Emma Sillett, 41, and Jenson Spellman were found dead after her car was discovered near Valehouse reservoir, Tintwistle.

    The pair, from Dinting, Derbyshire, were last seen on Tuesday at a McDonald's in Hattersley, Tameside.

    Officers believe no one else was involved in their deaths.

    Police are concerned for the wellbeing of a man who has been missing since 15 November.

    Glen Cherry, 26, went missing from the Groby Road area of Leicester.

    He is 6ft 2in and was last seen wearing a green Parka jacket with a furry collar, a leopard print shirt and scarf, black jeans and canvas-type trainers.

  17. Stolen tiara 'is worth millions'published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2018

    A famous tiara which was stolen on Tuesday is "worth millions", according to an auctioneer.

    James Lewis, of Bamfords Auctions in Derby, said the Portland Tiara, which was stolen from Nottinghamshire's Welbeck Estate, has most likely either been stolen for a private collection or will be broken down for the diamonds to be sold individually.

    The tiara, which was made by Cartier in 1902, was taken in the theft between 21:45 and 22:00.

    A diamond brooch, which was with the tiara in an armoured glass display case, was also taken.

    A couple from Market Harborough have sold their house and moved into a narrow-boat.

    Shane and Sarah Kennedy always had the idea of moving into a houseboat following summer trips to Foxton Locks, but the final push came last year when Shane discovered he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

    He said: "I was really ill last year so we decided to sell the house and buy a boat and give it a go."

    Despite having never even setting foot on a vessel of this type before, they are loving their time on the water.

    Shane added: "It’s been great. There’s no light pollution so you look at the sky and it's just a massive blanket of stars."
