Kaite Helps, from the trust, said: “Plastic pollution has been big news recently thanks to programmes such as BBC’s Blue Planet – but the problem is so close to home, not just in far-away oceans, and this photo is a stark reminder of that.

"In Derbyshire, plastic is clogging up our rivers and places that should be havens for wildlife. We have all contributed and we all need to make changes in order to prevent plastic waste.”

As he was being chased by police at the time, after failing to stop for officers, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is also investigating.

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

After an hour of waiting he managed to get to a phone and call a colleague staying in the same Ibis hotel in Reading. The colleague alerted hotel staff and, after another long wait, he was eventually helped off the floor.

Mr Shakespeare said the experience, on 16 January, highlighted a lack of awareness and training about how to respond to an emergency situation involving a disabled person.

    Richard ShakespeareImage source, Richard Shakespeare

Ibis has sent us a statement in relation to Mr Shakespeare's experience, in which they said they have "strong policies and procedures in place".

The spokesperson however admitted "on this occasion these procedures weren't followed," but claimed "all employees are trained in how to help disabled guests".

The hotel company has offered an apology and a free stay, something Mr Shakespeare is reluctant to accept.

"What about that experience do you think makes me want to engage with your brand or use your hotel again?" he said.

A spokesman for the rehabilitation company said they "work hard", welcome the report and "will use its findings to further strengthen [their] work”.
