    A Twitter campaign to allow Premier League goalkeepers to wear special shirts in memory of England World Cup winner Gordon Banks has gained over 11,000 retweets of support.

    Former Stoke and Leicester goalkeeper Banks, widely regarded as one of the game's greatest in his position, died on Tuesday, aged 81.

    Comedy writer Danny Baker has been lobbying the Premier League, suggesting each keeper wears a blue shirt bearing the number one on the back during the next set of fixtures.

    It has had support from Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, who said it would be a "perfect tribute".

    Horse racing is due to resume at Southwell today after a six-day shutdown because of the equine flu outbreak.

    Racing was suspended last week after three cases of the virus were discovered at a stables in Cheshire.

    The news to resume the sport has been widely welcomed, with four meetings taking place today.

  3. Stolen skating medals have 'massive sentimental value'published at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2019

    Former speed skater Jon Eley is hoping the public can help him recover a collection of European and World Championship medals stolen from his home in Colwick last month.

    The medals were won by Mr Eley and his wife Jo Eley, also a speed skater, between 2000 and 2014.

    A bike stolen during the same break-in on 24 January was recovered in St Ann's but the medals have yet to be found, external.

    Notts Police said a man had been arrested on suspicion of burglary and a woman had been charged with handling stolen goods.

    Mr Eley said: "The medals are not hugely valuable in terms of cost, but we dedicated our lives to our sport and with the support of our family, friends and team we have had the experience and opportunity to win these world and European championship medals.

    "So these medals have a massive sentimental value to ourselves and everyone who has supported us throughout our careers."

    Three people have been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods after a raid at a Leicester jewellers.

    Police said the raid at Smiths in High Street was in connection with a series of high-value burglaries in South Wales.

    Eleven people have already been arrested in connection with the raids.

    Officers, working alongside South Wales Police, said they seized several items of jewellery and are still searching the business.

    In January, simultaneous raids were carried out at 16 addresses in Swansea and 11 people were arrested.

    The three men arrested in Leicester remain in custody. police said.

    Reports of a man with an axe sent police rushing to a Nottinghamshire village this morning.

    They used the police helicopter in their search through Harworth at around 09:50 and have arrested a 29-year-old on suspicion of a public order offence.

    No-one was injured and police believe this was an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.

    De Montfort University has confirmed that four members of its Board of Governors have recently resigned.

    The vice chancellor and chief executive of the university, Dominic Shellard resigned on Monday.

    It's now emerged that Sir Ian Blatchford, Professor Tony Payne, Tony Stockdale and Oliver Mishcon have also quit.

    The university watchdog, the Office for Students, is currently investigating a number of regulatory matters at De Montfort.

    The club said the move was prompted by the departure of technical director Paul Hart, who left to join Stoke City last month.

    A 31-year-old man has been arrested, external on suspicion of carrying out an aggravated burglary in Newark in which a man and woman were both injured.

    Police said the man suffered injuries to his head, back, arm and hands during the assault in Philip Avenue on 18 January. The woman suffered hand injuries.

    The judge has begun summing up the evidence for the jury in the case of a man who denies robbing and killing a 100-year-old woman in Derby.

    Artur Waszciewicz, 40, from Wolfa Street, Derby, has pleaded not guilty to robbery and manslaughter.at Derby Crown Court.

    It’s alleged Mr Waszciewicz snatched Sofija Kaczan’s handbag in Empress Road, Derby, on 28 May.

    She died in hospital nine days later with injuries including a fractured neck.

    Rules around gambling ads, which include a ban on the use of young celebrities and sports stars, are to become stricter, especially online.

    From the start of April, gambling operators will also have to ensure that the majority of the audience of any social media influencers they work with are over 18.

    A recent UK study suggested 450,000 11 to 16-year-olds regularly gamble.

    However, Dr Mark Griffiths, professor of behavioural addiction at the University of Nottingham, said that overall the gambling industry is not keen to court young customers.

    "The younger people start [gambling], the more likely they are to develop a problem - you want to be in a position where they are starting in their adult lives," he said.

    "For most of the industry now, no-one would say they want custom from people below the age of 18."

    An elderly woman is in hospital with serious leg injuries after a hit and run on Friday.

    The woman was hit at around 19:00 at the junction of Milton Street and Cotmanhay Road, Ilkeston.

    The vehicle failed to stop and police are looking for any witnesses or anyone who could have dashcam footage of the incident.

    A Derbyshire woman who won a 300 mile race in freezing temperatures says she's looking forward to getting back to walking around the Peak District.

    Marianne Heading, from Ashover, completed the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra in Canada in about 173 hours over several days. Her training consisted of Peak District runs and walks as well dragging a tyre through her village to simulate the weight of the sledge.

    Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, Ms Heading, 47, said: "This place is amazing and it draws me back again and again but I still love the Peak District.

    "I still will go out for anything up to 11 hours trekking around the Peak District enjoying life there."

    Horse racing will resume in Southwell today following an outbreak of equine flu.

    A six-day lockdown by the sport's governing body forced the Nottinghamshire racecourse to cancel races last Friday and Sunday, after the virus was found at a Cheshire stables.
