    A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in Derby after officers found a lock-knife and suspected heroin and cocaine, external.

    The teenager was detained in Caxton Street on Wednesday morning by plain clothes officers acting on a tip-off.

    The A57 Snake Pass was closed because of snow and ice making driving conditions difficult.

    The road has since reopened.

    A 20-year-old man has been appeared in court charged with the murder of 17-year-old Jodie Chesney.

    Manuel Petrovic was arrested in Leicester last week after the teenager was fatally stabbed in a park in Harold Hill, London, on 1 March.

    The defendant appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Pentonville prison dressed in a prison top and spoke only to confirm his name, age and nationality to which he replied: "Croatia".

    Mr Petrovic, from Romford, was remanded in to custody by Judge Nicholas Hilliard.

    A 16-year-old boy has also been charged with murder and four other people have been arrested in connection with the killing.

    Leicestershire Police have joined their counterparts in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire by launching a knife amnesty, external.

    The force said people can hand over unwanted knives to "surrender bins" at Mansfield House, Spinney Hill, Wigston, and Market Harborough police stations over the next seven days.

    It will also be taking its knife arch to undisclosed locations to target those carrying sharp weapons.

    Supt Shane O’Neill said: "This weeks intensification activity has long been planned and is just one of the many strands of work we do to tackle knife crime."

    Severn Trent has been given permission to take more water from two Derbyshire reservoirs to top up its supply in the event of another dry summer.

    An Environment Agency drought permit means the company will be able to take water until the end of March from Foremark and Staunton Harold.

    Administrators for Bennetts department stores in Derby and Ashbourne say they are confident of finding a buyer.

    Bridgewood Financial Solutions said it was currently in discussions with a "number of interested parties" including retailers, entrepreneurs and investment companies for the firm, which entered administration last month.

    A strong smell of urine and stained carpets greeted inspectors who visited a Leicester care home.

    Staff from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) paid an unannounced visit in January to Barclay Street, where five people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour live.

    Their report said: "We noted a very strong odour of urine in one en-suite and noted damp to the ceiling.

    "Doors, skirting boards and walls were not clean, with dried marks from spilt drinks."

    The report also raised concerns about the reporting of incidents and staff training.

    A spokesperson for Barclay Street said the service had been undergoing a refurbishment programme at the time of the inspection and improvements had been completed.

    They said outstanding training requirements noted in the report had also been fully addressed.

    Drivers have been warned snow and ice are making driving conditions difficult in north Derbyshire.

    The county council says three roads are currently closed, external - the A6024 Holme Moss, the A57 Snake Pass and the A53 Axe Edge.

    The A537/A53 Cat and Fiddle was closed but has now reopened. However, more wintry showers are forecast for today.

    Police in Nottinghamshire say someone in the county recently called 999 to complain about a taxi driver refusing to take him to a bar, external.

    It was highlighted as an example of nuisance calls that delay emergency service call handlers dealing with urgent problems.

    Supt Paul Burrows said: "Despite the work we regularly do in the media, online and over-the-phone to explain to people how to use 999 responsibly, we do still receive a high number of misplaced calls to our emergency number."

    Knife amnesties are to begin across the East Midlands today.

    In Derbyshire, knife bins will be put outside seven police stations across the county.

    Meanwhile, in Nottinghamshire, it's the second amnesty in six months, after more than 400 bladed weapons - including swords and kitchen knives - were recovered in September.
