    A van driver who died in a crash on the M1 on Friday has been named as 83-year-old Derek Jacobs from Edgware in north-west London.

    Derbyshire Constabulary said it is understood the van had broken down in the left hand lane when it was hit by a red Ford Ka, which was subsequently hit by a coach.

    The accident happened about 12:30 between junctions 30 and 31 and saw the northbound carriageway closed for nine hours.

    Det Con Rich Howiss said Mr Jacobs died at the scene and the driver of the Ka remains in a serious condition in hospital.

    He asked for anyone who was travelling on the M1 and witnessed the crash to get in touch with them.

    A Derby resident paid £20 to have their waste removed but the people they hired to do it just dumped it 50m away instead.

    Detectives in Leicester are investigating after a man in his car was threatened by two men with knives and told to get out, before they drove off in it.

    Leicestershire Police said it happened at about 20:40 yesterday in Evington Road.

    They said the 20-year-old victim had been sitting in a red Vauxhall Astra opposite the junction with Abingdon Road and was not injured.

    Det Con Chris Richards said they are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened.

    He said: "Did you see anyone acting in a manner that caught your attention? If so, then please get in touch."

    A police spokeswoman said the incident is not thought to be linked to a stabbing of a 17-year-old on the same street last night.

    A new 1,000-desk office block could be built next to Nottingham railway station.

    An application has been submitted for the building, which according to artist's impressions would be seven-storeys high, by Nottingham City Council.

    They say it is part of the regeneration of the south of the city and construction would start in autumn, if approved.

    A Nottingham based investment company has acquired four landmark buildings in Derby - to convert into residential use.

    They include Jacobean House and the Wardwick Tavern as well as two properties on Iron Gate.

    They'll be converted into a mix of commercial and student accommodation with the 12 student units on Iron gate expected to be completed by August.

    Historic England reports, external Jacobean House was constructed in 1677 and was Derby’s first brick building. It's also thought to be one of the most haunted buildings within the city.

    Harry Maguire believes England could be a force to be reckoned with if they keep improving.

    The Leicester City defender played the full 90 minutes in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on Friday and he's hoping to continue that work when England play Montenegro tonight.

    Fire crews, the ambulance service and police are here on Mundy Street in the aftermath of a fatal fire.

    Just after 10:30 Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the property - it's believed at this stage the fire stated in the bedroom.

    The top two windows of the house are black from the smoke damage. Firefighters did manage to stop the blaze from spreading to neighbouring houses.

    A woman in her 70s has died and a man is currently in hospital being treated for injuries not thought to be serious.

    Local residents here have reacted with shock and upset. A joint fire and police investigation is now under way.

    Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the blaze on Mundy Street just after 10:30 - crews remain at the scene.

    The service said she died "as a result of her injuries" and a joint investigation with Derbyshire Police will now determine the cause of the fire.

    A shop worker was threatened with an unknown weapon wrapped in a carrier bag during a convenience store robbery yesterday.

    A motorcyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on a county lane in Leicestershire.

    It happened on Melton Road in Shangton, near Kibworth, just before 11:30 yesterday.

    The man in his 40s was taken to hospital in Coventry where he remains in a critical but stable condition. A lorry was also involved but no one else was injured.

    Police would like to hear from any witnesses.

    A 34-year-old has been charged after a man was stabbed in the back in a Derbyshire village.

    He was charged with wounding with intent, possessing a knife in a public place and criminal damage and remanded in custody and is due before Chesterfield Magistrates' Court this morning.

    The family of a 94-year-old man who was moved 13 times in hospital during the last 10 weeks of his life, said they were distressed by his treatment.

    Reg Thompson was admitted to Leicester Royal Infirmary after falling ill at home on 21 December and died at Kettering General Hospital on 2 March.

    Tests found Mr Thompson, who lived in Oadby for 59 years and served in the Royal Navy during World War Two, had a chest infection when he was first taken to A&E.

    During the last 10 weeks of his life he spent time at five different hospitals, including Melton Mowbray and St Luke's Hospital at Market Harborough, on 11 different wards - some for just a matter of hours.

    Brian Winterton, Mr Thompson's nephew, said: "If you suggested this as a storyline in a soap it wouldn't get through, it's just so unbelievable."

    Moira Durbridge, director of safety and risk at Leicester's Hospitals said the trust offered their "condolences to Mr Thompson's family" and were investigating a complaint into his treatment.

    She said: "It is very complex and involves many areas in our organisation, as well as two other organisations.

    "His family can be assured that we take their concerns very seriously and will be responding to them in detail once we have finished our investigation."

    A spokesperson for Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, the organisation in charge of the county's community hospitals, said: "Our sincere condolences to Mr Thompson's family. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with the family so that we can investigate it."

    A 17-year-old was stabbed in the buttock on a Leicester street.

    It happened at 21:00 last night near shops on Evington Road and the teenager was taken to hospital, although police said his injuries are not life threatening.

    So far no-one has been arrested.
