Plans to spend £1.8m resurfacing the Leicester Clock Tower area have been approved by councillors.
This includes Churchgate and Haymarket, which are proposed to be pedestrianised.
The improvement work is part of the Connecting Leicester programme, external to make the city centre connected, safe and family friendly, the city council said.
The authority has said the last time improvements were undertaken in the area was in conjunction with the development of Highcross in 2008.
The slabs are going to be replaced with the same materials that have been used in Jubilee Square, Cathedral Gardens and New Market Square.
Work is expected to start in October with the scheme due to complete in spring 2020.

About 350 Leicester workers are being sent to a factory in Derby to help keep up with demand for flowers this Mothering Sunday.
The recruitment company Staffline is already supplying workers to make bouquets of flowers from their branch in Derby but with such high demand this weekend, workers from Leicester are helping out.
Every morning the workers queue up on Granby Street to get transport to the factory.
They're collected outside A La Carte - an area of the Staffline company that usually supplies workers to the food manufacturing and production industry.
